CLOSING DAY CROWD BIGGEST OF ALL Mineral Springs Meeting Closes Under More Favora ¬ ble Conditions Than It Opened The fifteen days meeting at Mineral Springs Park came to a close yesterday with by far the greatest attendauce ever seen at tlie track The three trains from Chicago were uncomfortably crowded and the roads leading to the course from towns in the vicinity presented a steady procession of vehicles of all sorts bound for the races Had the attendance on the openlug days been anything near that of yesterday the meeting would have been a pronounced success instead of being a failure in a financial way Perhaps the attend ¬ ance of yesterday may be reasonably be accepted as an indication of better things when the second meeting comes to the point of action August 21 21In In general the racing was worth viewing al ¬ though in some cases of the processional order Cor ¬ dova Jack Witt and Eaton leading all the way and never giving their opponents a chance Golden Castle was backed down from 8 to 5 to evcu money in the first race and after running in close attend ¬ ance on Jim Mallady to the stretch passed hint and won as a hot favorite should but frequently does not Boyal Dolly was always an oddson favorite for the second race but Cordova was well backed and making the running from tlie start always liad tlu race safely won despite Steeles persistent efforts on the favorite Steele had better luck in the next race and was roundly applauded when lie brought ancient Doe Allen home an easy but tiring winner Tlie horse had opened the favorite at even money but receded to 7 to 5 on Coeur d Alene being backed down from 2 to 1 to S to The filly was away poorly but made up no ground and in her running showed no reason to justify the hearty support awarded her herThe The fourth a dash of a mile and a sixteenth was the most interesting race of the day but was marred by a start that gave the evenmoney favorite Otilo no chance However it was a wellcontested race Iwtween Sureoii Ben Lasca Palrna and Pedro and was not clear of result until the horses wore well down the homestretch Then Surcon got the better of Ben Lasca in a bumping encounter and drew out to win in time that made a new track record for the distance The other two races were easily won and void of any especial feature featureSecretary Secretary J S Wallace of tlie Mineral Springs track will leave for Lexington Ky to spend some of the time intervening until the opening of the second scheduled session of racing at Porter PorterSunon Sunon winner of the fourth race was bid up 105 over his entered price of 400 and bought in
