LEGALIZING BETTING IN INDIA None of the papers that have been writing on the Bengal Gambling Act says The Asian seem to have foreseen the complications that are likely to arise now that the act has come into force Under the provisions of this act gambling under certain restric ¬ tions is practically legalized that is the bookmak ¬ ers will be permitted to bet on the race course on race days Heretofore in India betting in any shape or form has been illegal but has been winked at by the police and the magistracy But in Bom ¬ bay the totalizator and In Bengal betting with bookmakers are now sanctioned by the Legislatures of the two administrations and this being so book ¬ makers in Bengal will be entitled to the help of the law in the recovery of their debts It will be well if this Is so for then the Royal Calcutta Turf Club will be placed in a position to ignore all transactions between bookmakers and their clients This will be a sound step and one that has long been desirable We will then cease to have the scandal of the long defaulters lists published In the Sheet Calendars In Bombay and Poona there are no bookmakers but as the totalizators are legalized it is open to those who ara dissatisfied with the dividends de ¬ clared or have other grievances against tin man ¬ agers of the machines to seek the aid of the law to have their grievances redressed Sydney Referee
