AUSTRALIAS DOUBLE DERBY WINNER. Over the Flemington course at Melbourne November 1, J. E. OBriens brown colt Berragoou won the Victoria Derby, with Radnor second aud Andolosia third. As he had previously wou the Victoria Racing Club Derby from Radnor at Randwick, the two important successes stamped him quite tho best Australian three-year-old of the year. Commenting on the result London Sportsman of November 3 said: "In Berragoou, who on Saturday carried, off the V. R. C. Derby, starting a good favorite at 0 to 4 against, Mr. J. K OBrien seemingly liossesses a really good colt, for only the other dav he won the A. J. C. Derby from Radnor and Ulvas Isle aud others, thus showing himself relatively better than he was towards the end of bis juvenile season, when Radnor beat him for the Second Sires Produce Stakes, for whicii Audelosia winner of the Caulfield Guineas as on Saturday, rilled the third place. Berragoou is by Multiform out of Wigelmar and there is no doubt that his sire is one of -the best race horses and stallions ever bred in New Zealand, for he wou well over 7.000 sovereigns out there in stakes before Sir Edgar Vincent purchased him and brought him to this country. Unfortunately, he turned roarer and his owner. Mr. Stead, took him back. In that climate roaring matters nothing, and perhaps the most successful sire of any in Australia was imported Bill of Portland, which was affected in his wind and was a shifty customer to boot. Multiform has sired many good ones before Berragoou, inclusive of the very successful brother and sister Noctuiforin and Nightfall. Berragoon is, I see, engaged in the Melbourne Cup. and if he has a cut In he will have to put up 104 pounds, the lowest weight, by the conditions, that a winner of either the A. J. C. or V. R. C. Derby may carry. This is a lenient burden eno-" bearing iu mind the top weight In the big handicap is Cadoniia, 133 pounds, while The Parisian, the winner of two seasons back lias 12G pounds. The allowance they have to give to Berragoon is certainly a big one. but be Is still quite a young three-year-old, the year out there beginning on August 1, so that it is. after all. only the same as our weight-for-age scale allowance in April, which from an old horse to a three-year-old over two miles is about 30 pounds."
