SOME CANDIDATES FOR DERBY HONORS. The Derby in recent seasons has so seldom fallen to one of the best juveniles of the previous year that any youngster which can gallop and stay may be regarded more or less hopefully with an eye to the Blue Ribbon, even though as little a,s 3 to 1 was not long ago taken to money about Capt. Dermot McCalmonts unbeaten The Tetrareh. At present rather longer odds are obtainable about the son of Roi Ilerode and Valiren, concerning whose well being there are still two tales atloat, despite his trainers assurance that he is all right. Personally I know nothing definite one way or the other, beyond what I haye read, and nothing is to be gleaned from the training reports. As to that though, one could scarcely expect to read anything about The Tetrareh, which, with a long winter before him, would naturally be having an easy time since the mishap, slight or otherwise, which befell him before Kempton. Corcyra not being in the Derby, Kenny-more, as his conqueror in the Dewhurst Plate, naturally will lind adherents, for admitted that he was in receipt of ten pounds from Lord Londonderrys colt, he won very comfortably, and that being only bis second essay in public the son of John Gaunt and Lesbia certainly deserves most respectful consideration, especially how that such other .cracks as Stornoway. Flying Orb and Aldford are touched in their wind. Ilapsburg, too. cut up most disappointingly at Kempton, when last of nine for the Imperial Produce Plate to By George, Sunny Land and-Longtown. By George and Kennymore are undoubtedly two colts that will be beard of when wagering on the Derby begins again, but they, like The Tetrareh, possess obvious claims, wheras, going by the precedents afforded by the Derby victories of such, as Spearmint, Orby, Sighorinetta. Minoru and Tagalic or even Suustar one- would have to look further alicld. In the circumstances, one might well glance at tlie form and pedigree of the latest successful beginner, Sergoi, which won the Houghton Stakes last Friday, staying the mile well, lie certainly beat nothing of very much account, for Llangelnor, which ran him to half a length giving three pounds, had only won one of his eight previous races, but it was decidedly a promising first effort on the part of Mr. Bower Isinays colt. At present, as far as the book takes us, Sergoi is only the same animal as Llangelnor, which, on the Clearwell Stakes form Is inferior to Carrickfergus, and therefore from 14 to 21 pounds behind Stornoway and Black Jester, and also well behind Keniiymore, which defeated Carrickfergus by six -lengths in tliq Dewhurst Plate. All the same, Sergoi, if not exactly a beauty to look at, possesses the gift of going and be stays. Moreover, be won his first race, which Is more than some have done whose names are. enrolled as winners of classic races. By Desmond .out of Cascatella, by Hackler, Sergoi is, of course, all right oh his sires side, but his danis pedigree is quite as suggestive of .jumping as of Hat racing, for she is a sister to Wingfield, which was a smart but rather uncertain steeplechaser. Cascatellas- sire, Hackler, although he gave us St. Brendan, Hacklers Pride and Filas-sier, earned most of his fame at the stud by begetting good chasers. Among these were the National winner, Jenklnstown, Duke of Wellington. Covert Hack, Faucirul, The Sapper. Dodragh and Bally-hackle. At the same time, Cascatella comes on her dams side of a good branch of the No. 4 family, tracing back lo Overreach, by Birdcateher out of Virginia. The last-named was the dam also of the famous Virago and of Sacrifice, the ancestress in tail female of Devotion, and therefore also of The-bias, Seabreeze, Rock Sand and other classic winners. "Vigilant," in London Sportsman.
