NOTES OF THE TURF IN LANDS ABROAD. Basil Jarvls, the Newmarket trainer, was married at Fordham, near Newmarket, on Dec. 10, to Miss Nellie Townsend. Baron Kdouard do Rothschilds crack two-year-old colt. I.a Farina, which split a pastern early In the autumn, is gradually getting over his accident and able to do trotting exercise. J. C. Watson, his trainer, holies to put him in regular work again at the beginning of the coming year. The deatli is announced, on Nov. 20, at Weimar, of ids Excellency, Count Ernest August von Wedel. at the ago of 75. Count von Wedel, who was for many years Master of the Horse to the Emperor William, was a great lover of horse-racing, and was a member of the Union Club which rules racing in Germany. Mr. .1. B. Joel Is the champion breeder of the year in England, being represented by IS winning horses of 33 races, and 20,955. Mr. Hall Walker and Lord Derby ran close for second honors, other prominent breeders being Mr. E. Kennedy, Mr. Ilnlton, Mr. W. Raphael, Lord Harewood, Lord Rosebery, and Major Loder. The Duchess of Portland possesses quite a little "stud" of diamond horses in the form of brooches, presented to her by the Duke each time his racing stable registered a success. These tokens at last became so numerous that the Duchess suggested that the gift should take some other form, as her jewel case was overllowing with miniature diamond steeds. It is not generally known that the famous ex-jockey Tom Cannon has in his time ridden in a hurdle race. This was at Wroughton, when he weighed S4 pounds, and was on a horse of his own which had been given him as a hunter. The race was run at catch-weights, and some of the competitors carried 175 pounds. Cannon, at this great difference of poundage, of course, won. The most successful gentleman rider In Austria-Hungary during the current year was Captain E. Foils, .with 07 victories. This is the third successive season In which he has headed the winning list, says "Deutscher Sport." having ridden 77 winners last year and 51 In 1911. Altogether, from his first season In 1900, when he steered three winners, Captain Folis has taken part in S20 races, of which he was successful in 244, an excellent average of 29.75 per cent. Imported stallions make a great show in the winning list in the Argentine. At the beginning of the present mouth Jardy France came first wltn nearly S0,000 to his credit: Old Man second, with close on S3.000; Cyllene England third, with ?2Si,500 Diamond Jubilee England fourth, with 5S,000: Val dOr France fifth, with 79,500: Orange sixth, with nearly 70,000: and Polar Star .Ireland seventh, with 34,000. Orange and Old .Man are both native-bred sires, by imported Orbit out of daughters respectively of Flageolet and Dollar.
