FIVE FAVORITES BEATEN QUEED IS ONLY FIRST CHOICE TO SCORE AT PALMETTO PARK. Cool, Threatening Weather and Slow Track Detract from Enjoyment of Days Racing Weights for the Christmas Handicap, Charleston, S. C, December 22. Cool and threatening weather, coupled with a slow track, detracted from the racing this afternoon at Palmetto Park. The card, aside from the third and fourth races, the latter being the feature of the afternoon, was an ordinary one and engaged numerous starters of mediocre calibre. The card was accounted for by live second choices and one favorite. In the third race, one mile and a quarter, Oiitlun. a recent winner at the distance over practically the same sort of company, finished unplaced. Mycenae, the well-backed second choice, won the purse. Wards handling of Oiitlan occasioned comment and the stewards at once began a probe of the riders listless effort and the horses poor showing. The stewards gave jockey Frank Keogh, recently suspended, a supplementary hearing this afternoon, but did not announce any change in their ruling against him. Hurt Ciaypool succumbed last night to his illness and his bony will be taken home bv his brother, Curtis Ciaypool, to Columbus, O., for "burial. James Gritlin was an arrival today from Louisville. He reports that the horses wintering at Douglas Park and Churchill Downs are In splendid condition and that the line weather prevailing in that Iocality has afforded trainers plenty of opportunity to give their charges light exercise. Jockey .Montour, who has been hunting since the close of the Latonia meeting, was an arrival today. Hob Harris arrived this morning with Flying Footsteps and Hugh Gray, which he is handling for the well-known actress, Lotta Gladstone. Jockey Snyder, who suffered a bad fall before the opening of the racing here, aud lias since been confined to a local hospital, was discharged yesterday, fully recovered. Jockey Hurlingame is another injured rider able to leave the hospital. He was tit the track this afternoon. L. W. Moore had an addition to his racing stable today by the arrival of two yearlings by Dr. Hoots and a three-year-old lilly from Nashville. Secretary Xathauson this afternoon announced the weights for the 44 entries to the Christmas Handicap, to lie run on Thursdav next. The race is at one mile and has a value of 2,000. The field probably will come from the following: Donald Macdon-ald, 120; Samuel R. Meyer. 115; Sleeth. 110; Lochiel. 104; Sir John Johnson, 121; G. M. .Miller, 111; Star Actress, 101; Floral Park. 110; Dartworth. Ill; Charlestonian, OS; Clubs, 108; Monocacy. 104; John Furlong, 111; Grosvenor. 100; AVilhite, 110; Prince Hermis, 111. After the finish of the opening race, jockey Byrne, who rode Flying Yankee, claimed a foul against tlie winner for alleged interference on the stretch turn, but the stewards, after hearing Huxtons side, did not entertain tlie claim. G. M. Ridge, acting for G. E. Ridge, made a claim for Kiva after she was beaten in the fifth race, but the stewards held that the claim invalid on account of the claimants failure to lodge necessary Jockey Club papers with the secretary showing that he was authorized agent for G. E. Ridge, in whose name Stealaway ran. Among the best trials shown at Palmetto Park this morning were: Relle Terre Half mile in 40. Bob R. Three-quarters in 1:18. Brynliniah Mile In 1:49.
