MORE STAKES FOR OTTAWA MEETINGS. Management of Connaught Park Jockey Club Plans Increases for 1914 Racing. Ottawa. Ont., January 5.- The Connaught Park Jockey Club will increase its stakes by nearly 0,-000 for the coining season. General Manager Rohr-back announced yesterday that this would be the ease, the large increase being mainly due to the new S3,500 Merchants Stakes and the Directors Stakes of 1914.sh,000 The Merchants Stakes will lie run during the spring meeting and is for the purpose of attracting the entries in the 0,000 Dorval Park Derbv to Ottawa. The cream of the American three year-olds will he seen in the big raee at Dorval and that it is honed practically the entire entry list for the big race will start here in the Merchants Stakes. There will be live stake events at each meeting this year. Action was decided upon liy the executive committee with the idea of giving local patrons of the sport a chance to sec some of the best horses on the continent in action. Aside from the two new stakes, the purses and handicaps will be increased in value. It has been arranged by Manager Rohr-back to have one steeplechase each day, both spring and fall, and he will leave on February 1 for Charleston and Juarez to obtain subscriptions and round no the horsemen for both the llat racing and the jumps. Mr. Rohrbaek is paying particular attention to steepleohasing. This spring the intield at the track will be in good shape, sodded and laid out as originally planned. On the far side of the track the name of the track will be formed of llower beds, it being arranged that the color scheme will be green and yellow, the Duke of Coiiiianghts racing colors. The new chutes will be used this season and additional stabling accommodation, to house fifty more horses, will be built. Last soring the horses stabled at the track nuinlRTCd 212," and in the fall I53S. Manager Uohrbaek expects to sec 450 horses here for the spring meeting this year.
