r i I i j . , . i , , ; i , r r EXCELLENT RACING OF A TENNESSEE -BRED TWO-YEAR-OLD IN LAST YEARS CAMPAIGN tr- 4 In the days when Chicago was a great racing center W. W. Darden and Co.s two-year-old colt, Ivan the Terrible, caused something of a sensation b.v running three-quarters of a mile over the Worth track in l:111f,. At that time 1904 only one other horse, Dick Welles, had ran three-quarters in that time, so in j equaling the Dick Welles record Ivan the Terrible was rightfully deemed to have done something in a racing way quite out of the ordinary. He was a capital race horse and half brother to another called Monsieur Beaueaire. At the same time Darden and Co. owned a speedy mare named Nannie Hodge, also a good winner .ver Chicago tracks. Darden still owns both and as a result of their mating sent to the races last year one of the crack two-year-olds of 1013. This was the gelding, Hodge, which, in a strenuous campaign of twenty-eight races, won fifteen, leading the horses of his ago in number of races won. I lodge was introduced to racing in quite distinguished company at Churchill Downs, May 23, and ran unplaced to Old Rosebud, Boamer and Harwood at four and a half furlongs over a muddy track. Five days later, at Douglas Park, over a fast track, lie give some evidence of what he was capable of doing by equaling the then track record at live-eighths of a mile when he easily defeated John Guild, Toynbee, Sosius, Isob lilaek and live others in 1:00. He won by four lengths and carried 100 pounds. At the same track, June , he was beaten a hall length at the same distance by J. AV. Schorrs colt, Vnndergrift, in 1 :0!IM-,. Hodge had acted badly at the post and in one of his flurries ran a considerable distance at top speed, all of which naturally affected his chance unfavorably. At Lalonia, June 0, he did the same thing, only worse, and was unplaced to Black Timey. Pebcco and Sosius at five and a half furlongs. Then he seemed to lose firm for a while, lie was badly beaten June 20 at the same distance in a race won by Idith AV., with Old Hen second and Ambition third. July 3 he ran third to Cosis and Harwood at three-quarters of a mile in 1:13, having indulged in a lop-speed runaway of three-eighths before the start. Then he mended his manners and, behaving himself well at the post, defeated Gipsy Love, Caro Nome and six others at three-quarters of a mile in l:l."!5. This was at Latonia, July 5, and he was then taken north for a campaign over the Canadian tracks. His first start across the border was in a purse race at AVindsor, July 10, distance live-eighths of a mile. This he won by a nose from Black Tone.v in 1:00, but: the latter carried US pounds to ids 105 and was lie better of the two that. day. Birdie Williams was third. At the same track, July 22, Osaple defeated It in b.v a head at live and a half furlongs in l:0if,, Bags being a bad third. At Hamilton, July 20, he ran third to Black Tonev and F.merald Gem at the same distance in the same time. All of his races were for purses and so couiinued for some time. He now began a sequence of winning races that was not broken until he had taken six purses in succession. The first of these was at Hamilton, August 2, at three-quarters in 1:13.-.. with 115 pounds up. Birdie Williams running second and Fathom third. The second was at Fort ia-ie. August ;. and in this he defeated MKs Cayle. V mdeigrift and five more at live and a half furlongs in 1 :m;. August !. over a slow track, lie vanquished Miss Gayle, Bustling Brass. Osap!e and Perpetual in -.OSr.. August 13 he carried 122 pounds and gave ten pounds and a heating to Czar Michael at three-quarters in 1:1 1".-,. Fathom was third and the going was good, hut not fast. These races were at Fort Krie. August 25, at AVindsor, be gave away considerable weight and beat Bustling Brass, Czar Michael and ve more over a heavy, track in lMOf, at five and a half furlongs. At Ottawa, August 20, he won from Ftnerald Gem. Stevesta and four more at three-quarters in 1:14. The track was slow and he carried 12S pounds to 104 on F.merald Gem and 97V. on Stevesta. Then came his first start in a stake race and he ran unplaced. This was in the llochelaga Handicap, at Montreal, September 11. three-quarters of a mile. Surprising. 123 pounds, was the winner in 1:13. with Knierald Gem second and The Usher third. Hodge carried 12! t.iunds. but was left at the post and not persevered with. At the same meeting lie carried 12S pounds and won a purse at three-quarters in 1:1.4 over a muddy track, AVater Lady. OS pounds, being second and I.u-ei Petal, 00. third. At Toronto. September 20, he surprised all hands when he defeated Southern Maid bv a head at three-quarters in 3:i::f with Surprising a good third. At Toronto they could not exactly see that any other horse had any right to defeat Southern Maid, hence she was a 1 to 2 favorite, while Hodge was third choice ai a shade over to 1. They carried stake weights. In the Michaelmas Handicap Hodge confirmed this running. He carried 125 pounds and so did Surprising, while Southern Maid was given 12i. In a rousing finish he defeated Surprising by a head and ran the throe-quarters of the race in 1:12. Czar Michael. M2 pounds, was third, only beaten a neck, but Southern Maid was a bad fourth. This was a high-class race in all respects. Hi last race in Canada was in the Grey Stakes, at a mile. In ihis Surprising. 1li itounds to his 113. beat him by a nee!;, but had fouled him repeatedly and was pronipt;v d.Mpialitiod. so Hedge took the race. The mile was run in 1:41. lie was now brought back to Kentucky. At Douglas Park. October 1. he ran unplaced to Black Toney. Bringhurst and Old Ben, at three-quarters in 1:11. and at Churchill Downs. October lit, was again unplaced, this time to Bradleys Choice. Kdith AV. and Old Ben. in 1:12. October 17 lit; won a purse from Anytime. Bronzewing and three more at thiee-quarters and was taken to Latonia. Here, October 20. over a liiuddv track, he ran unplaced to Brigs Brother. Anytime and AVaterbass. giving awav much weight. In the Fort Thomas Handicap at three-quarters he ran second to Ralph, with Bringhurst third. November 1 he won a purse from AAaterbass, Bac and three more and er. October S brought his years labors to a close when, with 120 pounds up. he ran second to David Craig, 1i; pounds. It was a bad track, the three-quarters of the race was covered in 1:17 and Maud B. L. was a good third. From a"l of this it can without trouble be deduced that Hodge is hardy and enduring, fast and a capital weight carrier, as well as being a probable stayer. He is wintering at Juarez and may be given a race or two there near the close of the meeting. If his hard campaign of last year has done him no harm he should play an important part in the racing of 1014. His record and pedigree are as follows: A ear. Asc. Sts. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Unp.
