El Paso, Tex., February 17. Lowering skies and threatening weather did not prevent the gathering of a big crowd or detract from the racing at Juarez today. The majority of the races were hotly contested, particularly was this true of the Iirst and second races. Only one favorite Avon and the talent had rather a disastrous session. Captain Burns ran like a good three-year-old iu winning the Coahuila Handicap. He ran tho six furlongs in 1:12 and defeated good opposition. He ran in close attendance to the fast juice set by tho favorite, Royal Dolly, and when the latter began to show signs of distress opposite the paddock gate. Van Dusen applied his whip and the colt gamely drew away from the others at the Iinish. Colquitt was forced lo run extremely wide all the way. Moonlight won the long-distance race of the day, ::t one mile and one-eighth, from a poor lot in a common canter. In the absence of the best of the jockeys, most of whom are under susiension, the saddle honors are usually well divided nowadays. A. Mott, a diminutive chap who is coming to the front among the apprentices, piloted two winners today, both at rcmiuiTative odds. Little Birdie, fhe only favorite to score today, went to the post at 4 to 1. She won by only a neck from Tildy Woltfarth. and Rubicon II., the third horse, was only a head away. In the second race, Auntie Curl, Francis and Transact came to the winning post noses apart in the order named. Dusky Dave, the fourth horse in tills race, was only a head behind the placed contenders. Sea ClilT, in the stable of J. Umensettcr, is in right good form. He came from behind witli a rush in tiie stretch to win the closing dash oil by himself. Jockey A. Mott was suspended for live days for rough riding in the fifth race on report of the patrol judge.
