Tin- half-mile people say they cannot make ■ay money with the machine belting, as there is not enough business on the half mile tracks. flu- tnemb.Ts of the new commission just announced by Governor Goidsboroogfa ate Duaae 11. Kice. Dr. M. .1. S. Cromwell and J. Ldwiii Griffith. They succeeded Redmond C. Stewart. Frederick von KapIT and Spalding Lowe Jenkins, all of whom got tired of the pressure from the half mile track people, including the Timoniuni Fair, and resigned. Both Dr. Cromwell and Mr. Rice are said to be well up on horse racing and capable of dealing with the whole question. Dr. Cromwell has bad experience in horse breeding, and his brother, the late "Dick" Cromwell, was Interested in trotting barse* to a considerable extent. Mr. Rice was up to two years ago interested in the TJmnaiam Fair, and s known as a horse breeder who breeds and sells horses. Mr. Griffith is apparently md so generally known as he other two members of the commission, but those who know say that Governor Gotdsborough acted airly in making his selections and offered the piai -to none but first CbUM nun lie i- said to 1 iv turned down some well qualified men iu order to make -elections thai would in- above criticism. flic members of the commission do not :i , pay. and iheie is little or no thanks attached to tin positions, lb.- commission which has just resigned pleased the Pimlii-o people, who own the onlj mile track iu the county, but displeased tin- half mile peon] ■. There are tour hall mile tracks in the county — Timoniuni. which i- a strictly legitimate county fair proposition; Prospect Park, which has a smaller county tair. and Electric Park ami tin- Gentlemens Driving Park, which have no fairs attached. The Timoniuni people have complained that last year the] lost aboul ;. nmi on racing, notwitbstand ing that the Pinuico people loaned them tin- in-. 1-narj machines for the betting. The Gentlemens Driving Park and the Prospecl Park people did nol run at all last year. Electric Park did have om-meeting and is preparing for another after the close Of Iiiu li. ... The governor might have named a commission which would have closed all the tracks, as he bad in hi- message t Hie Legislature advocated legists Hon against ail race track betting. As be did not do so. the race track people are speaking well of him today a- broad minded. The new commission has not yet organised. It has to elect ., secretary.
