, . ; GREAT RACER AND SIRE IS DEAD. It is re|M rled from Austria that the stallion Matchbox died in thai country a little while ago. and it B something of a coincidence that his gr.-alisl turl rival. I. a. his, was destroyed onlv a fen weeks back. Matchbox, a coll by St. Simon— Match Girl, was foaled ill 1881, his bleeder being the late Lord Alington. His fust appearance was made in the National Breeders Foal Slakes at Sandnwn Park, in which he linislied third to Ilelphos and Clare. His three subse.pi.ui essays as a tworyear-ald were all marked by success, in the Breeders Produce Stakes at Kemp toe Park he beat a big field, including Son o" Mine. Galloping Hick and Throstle; while al the Houghton Meeting at Newmarket he won both the Criterion Slakes and the ll.whurst Plate, and he retired into winter quarters xv i t Ii a g«....l reputation, though he was generally considered to be inferior to La. las. The pair met for the first time in the Two Thou-and Guineas, in which odds of 5 to 5 were laid on Lord Roseber.vs colt, while .» to 4 was oil offer against Matchbox. The race resulted in a victory for the favorite by a length and ■ half. The pair were again in .«pposition in the Derby. Ladas repeating his Newmarket triumph.
