Western Sprinter Puts Fastest Three-Quarters of Belmont Park Meeting to His Credit. New York. Julie 18. — Threatening weather and an ordinary card did not keep todays attendance down to any noticeable degree. In the second race. Clover Hughes, in taking the measure of a fair lot of sprinters, ran tin- fastest throe quai tors of the present meeting and scored handilv over Water Welles and Pawhuaka. The defeat of Ceo. Boeseh in the third came as a surprise, as the colt appeared to have the race at his mercy on form and was quoted accordingly. The winner tinned up in Tinkle BeB, which, after racing for-wardly throughout, withstood challenges from Busy Kdith and the favorite. Geo. Boeseh broke from the outside when the barrier went up and was rather slow to get going. He was lapped on the leaders at the sixteenth post, but faltered in the final drive. Only three started in the fourth race, with Crossbna always ruling a short-priced favorite. The finish found Crossbun first by a comfortable margin over the early pacemaker, Perth Rock. The latter showed plenty of early speed and appeared 1 to he going easily, but when challenged by tli ■ winner quit badly. J. J. Lillis accounted for the opener rather easily. Executor, a well-backed first choice, finished second. The steeplechase resulted in a good contest, I.y- sander and Skibbereeu fighting it out all the way and the former was returned the winner. Lysandei fenced in better fashion than in his previous stalls and. alter assuming tin.- lead the last time around. was never seriously menaced. Oakhurst. running to his best form, took tlie last race easily. Crover Hughes was bid up from his entered price of ,200 to *l.."piK» by J. R. Marquette, Jr.. but was bought in. J. J. Lillis, after winning the first race, was advanced by the same bidder from 00 to $.sfH ami was likewise bought in. The Haggin sale, which is to l e held at Bheepn head Hay Monday, is attracting quite a bit of at-n tenthm. As Monday is a nan-racing day. it promises 1 to be well attended.
