IMPROVEMENTS AT LEXINGTON TRACK. Lexington. Ky.. June 27. — Inder the direction of Superintendent .lames P. Ross, a gang of men with teams and scrapers have been for tlie past two weeks and will be for the next live weeks engaged in tutting away I hill in the e eater field of the Kentucky Associations race track. This hill has ever been a ■ orce of snnoyaaee to racegoers, who. for any reason or cause, elected to see the running of the events from the ground. Because of the hill it was not possible to see except from tho grandstand the horses running for about an eighth of a mile after they began to round the first turn, and likewise, it obstructed the view of the start of races at three ipiart.-rs of a mile. It has long been the desire of the officials of the association to remove the hill, but never until now were thev able to do It without going into debt for the work. The top soil, the rich earth Immediately underlying the grass, was spread upon the track in the homestretch, while the underlying clay was iluniMNl into the lower places of the infield with Hurt-suit that it will be more nearly level than hereto fare, When the work is completed it will be ihis-sible for an observer to stand on any portion of the ground and see I race from its start at any point to the finish. Rye is to be sown in the infield this fall and next spring It will he replaced by blue grass. Several other improvements are being made with the profits accuriag from the lasi spring meeting. A concrete walk sufficiently high to permit persona to enter automobiles and other vwhielcs from it has been laid all along the rear of the grandstand a I the side of the roadway anil the shed is t-. be extended along the rear of the stand for tin-full length in order that patrons will be protected from the weather iu arriving and departing. The macadam roadway is being extended to the two new stables erected last spring at the bead of the homestretch ami the system of drainage is eatng improved. Considerable work is being done on the inside sand track, which was soiu.-what washed by recent heavy rains. The ditches at the side of the main track are being cleaned out. A iiumlier of cesspools are being const met oil near the stables. The judges stand Is to be rebuilt so that occupants of the grandstand amy see over it. The stewards will likely be placed in a stand In the Infield, leaving only the placing Judges to ocean* the nreoaat stand.
