COMES CLOSE TO RECORD PANDEAN RUNS MILE AND A HALF IN 2:31 OVER TK.E LAUREL PARK TRACK. Slow Paco in Early Part of Race Alone Responsible for Failure of Whitney Racer to Reduce Goodrichs Record of 2:30. Baltimore, Mil., October 212. Hail Roamcr boon a starter in the Dixie Handicap, run at Laurel this afternoon, there probably would have been a new American record lor a mile and a half. This is nu Id in no disparagement of Harry Payne Whitneys four-year-old, Pandean, the winuer of the stake, for right gallantly did he perform, but the early pace was so slow that with Reamers remarkable flight of speed it is altogether probable that Andrew Millers good three-year-old would have beaten Goodrichs record of 2:30-i, made at Washington Park in 1SDS. The mile and a half was run tliis iifternon by Pandean in l!:.ll. !. M. Miller was the leader for a mile, the half being covered in 50 and three-quarters in 1:1677,.
