GREAT SPOKT AT LATONIA CHALMERS WINS IN MANNER THAT LEAVES NO DOUBT OF HIS SUPERIORITY, Concedes Considerable Weight to Pick of Juvenilos in Kentucky, Sets All of the Pace and Scores Commandingly Big Crowd Out. Cincinnati, 0., October 31. Latonias fall racing season readied its zenith this afternoon when an attendance almost the equal of last Saturday witnessed the sport, and a seven-race card enabled them to indulge in speculation that exceeded in volume the record of a week ago. Secretary Maginn provided for tlie occasion an excellent card, featured by the Autumn Stakes and two 00 handicaps, one for juveniles at six furlongs and the other a mile and one-sixteenth dash. This trio of events engaged some of the best racers now in training in these parts and furnished some interesting sport. The Autumn Stakes was over the mile ronte and carried a net value of ,000. It was won by Little Father, which, under capable handling, outstayed Brooktield and Yenghee in a sharp stretch drive. Winning Witch was the favorite, but she lost much ground by an attempt to run out on tin; first turn, and Hartwcll could not make her extern! herself thereafter. Restraining tactics were employed on Little Father this afternoon and it worked a big Improvement in his running. Despite having on several occasions convincingly beaten the same company that opposed him In the six-furlong handicap today. Chalmers was neglected in the" betting in favor of Solly and Ed Crump, it evidently being figured that his heavy Impost would bring about his failure. If any doubt formerly existed as to his superiority, it was thoroughly dispelled by todays running, for he forced a fast pace all the way and won commandingly. Solly outstayed Ed Crump for second place. On his showing this afternoon Chalmers looms up as a top-notcher and it looks as if he will stay, too. Waterbass, enjoying clear sailing in the mile and a sixteenth handicap, and running in his best form, scored over Floral Park and Hodge in the fast time of 1:44, a fraction slower than the track record, Waterbass success. -wis- somewhat dimmed by the failure of Floral Park to get awav on even terms with him. One of the assistant starters, standing directly ip her path, held her with both bands, and when she broke she knocked him down. She closed a big gap, linislied courageously and probably would have won with an even break at the start. Donerail was virtually left in this race. The Texas contingent, headed by J. W. Fuller, just missed a double with Injury and Tokay. The former won handily enough over the 4 to 5 favorite. Star Actress, but Tokay was lieaten a narrow margin by Converse.- The latter, in addition to showing a smart performance, made one of the gamest efforts seen in a long time in standing a furious drive for nearly the entire race. The change of riders from Murphy to Loftns worked marked improvement in Wilhites running, for that horse showed the way for the entire six furlongs journey in tlie sixtli and beat Bob Heiir sley a neck. Bob Hensleys showing today was also an improvement over bis recent efforts. The big .field of starters was responsible for unavoidable crowding which the leaders escaped. The worst form upset of tlie meeting attended the running of the closing dasli when Sun Queen, which in previous starts, has been badly beaten off, showed high speed and led all the way to win as her rider pleased. Guide Post was an Intended "good thing" in this race, but experienced a rough trip and was never a prominent factor. Crowding was responsible for jockey Olt being unseated from Freeman in the second race. He escaped with a shaking up. There was a big delegation of visitors from Louisville today. Most of them returned to tlie Falls City tonight, the train stopping at the Latonia track main gate for their accommodation. Injury and Converse, in the two-horse combination, paid S22.75. The three-horse went to the Held at .30. : W. Walkers Colston had to be destroyed on account of injuries sustained yesterday while being galloped. The following horses were sold by auction this morning: San Jon, W. F. Taylor. 20; Flossie Lee. N. T. Dortch, 00; Galley Slave, R. O. Deem, 50. Joseph A. Murphy sent word here today that he would be detained in St. Louis until Tuesday, but that he would arrive here Wednesday and remain for the rest of the meeting to discuss the New Orleans racing prospects. W. H. Horton, F. Staton. J. M. Brown, S. M. Henderson, C. R. Anderson and G. B. Moreland are the latest owners to signify .an intention of shipping- to Charleston and have made applicatons for stall room and reservation on the special train leaving Latonia for tlie South Carolina city Nov. 10.
