CHALMERS FAILS TO STAT J. S. HAWKINS CRACK JUVENILE RUNS UNPLACED AT LATONIA TRACK. J. N. Camdens Solly Is Winner of Queen" City Handicap, Mile Test for Two-Year-Olds Lady Moonet Only Favorite to Score. Cincinnati, 0., November 4. That staying may not lie Chalmers forte was indicated by the running of the Queen City Handicap, one mile, at Latonia this afternoon. The Hawkins star was decisively beaten by Solly, Iif, Jr., and Leo Hay. The race was the headliner of a good program and brought out tn; stars of the juveaile division now in training here. The running showed Solly to be a fair roit, but it is open to questiou if he is a good ftayer, for he was weakening in the final drive, after having enjoyed a commanding lead, and w.is steadily succumbing to Iif, Jr.s final challenge. Chalmers and Ed Crump followed Solly closely for the first three-quarters. Ed Crump was the first to retire, but Chalmers continued on when straightened out in the stretch, as if he would overhaul the leader, but his impost was a telling factor in the last sixteenth and he was passed by Iif, Jr., and I.eo Hay. On the strength of his string of victories at shorter distances over the same opposition, he was meeting . today, Chalmers ruled an overwhelming lavorite, with Iif Jr. and Ed Crump much preferred to Solly. Restraining tactics employed with Chalmers, in contrast to former methods, may have contributed to his poor showing today. One of the biggest crowds of the meeting witnessed Ihe sport. The crowd was largely made up of ladies, who were admitted free for the occasion. Conditions for the snort were ideal and the racing was immensely enjoyed, particularly by the first-lime visitors. The butting was again of good volume -and the entire staff of mutuel operators were kept at ton speed throughout the afternoon. Favorites were again in eclipse, Lady Moonet being the only choice to score. The upsets began when Aunt Josie and Fidget failed in the opener, which was won in handy fashion by Anna Kruter. The English horse, Glencairn, was given the call in the second but aftor he liart chased Otliello for lialf a; mile, he retired and it enabled Bob Hensley to beat tin tiring Otliello for first money. The" fifth race, one mile and a sixteenth, brought a hard jolt tor the regulars by the failure of Belle of Bryn ilaivr and Injury to place. Yenghee won L the purse from Impression, with Bonne Chance third. Gross effort on Belle of Bryu Miiwr was a weird-looking one. and she also appeared to have the worst of the send-off. The closing dash was again run in semi-darkness, it being Impossible to distinguish the horses accurately even a furlong off. Weyauoke drew away from the others right near the end to win comfortably over W. W. Clark, a "field" horse, with OSullivan just beating Howdy Howdy, the favorite. Princess Callaway, entered for ?400, was claimed by dallaher Bros, for 20 after the last race. The mare has been coveted by breeders on account of her blood lines, she being by Broomstick Flocar-line. It was Mr. Livingstons intention to retire her to the stud at the close of Latonia racing and mate her next spring with some good sire. Bob Hensley and Lady Moonet, the winners of the two-horse combination, yielded 0.35 for . The field backers each received .95 for in the three-horse pool through the failure of anyone to name the winuers of the fourth, fifth and sixth races. Arthur B. Rouse, who was re-elected yesterdiv to j. :ress. was among todays visitors. W. S. Trevey, at the close of racing here, will ship the horses he lias in charge to Louisville, where thev will be wintered. He intends to apply the firing irons to Ormulu and Inkle before they are turned out until spring. I. T. Chinn is negotiating for the services of jockev Metcalf during the Juarez meeting. Joseph A. Murphy, who will manage and preside over the New Orleans racing, was an arrival this morning from his home in St. Louis. He spoke in positive fashion of the New Orleans project and assured many of the horsemen-that the forty days of racing will be carried through as, planned. The purses will be paid promptly, according to Judge Murphy, and the money placed in the bank before Ihe meeting will be ample for that purpose. Judge Murphy also stated that there is a daily growing local interest in the proposed meeting and .that all opposition to it will have vanished long before the opening. Many of the horsemen assured him that they would send representation to the Crescent City to assist in the revival of the sport. Judge Murphy -will remain here until the close of the meeting and later on he will go to Plmlieo and Havre de Grace to interest the turfmen at those points in the New Orleans racing.
