Hal-leiibecks speedy mare Housemaid, following several disappointing pertorniances, made good here thb afternoon wlien she beat a band of last sprinters in J tile six-lurlong handicap. Housemaid carried 12:5 J pounds, made all of her own pace and beat Coquette J 1J" three-quarters of a length. Coquette was making -her lirst appearance in public since she changed J bands this fall and was made the medium of such heavy support that she went to the post favorite J ver Housemaid. She showed a good performance. Off none too well, she got quickly to the front and 1 Mas a keen factor throughout the last half mile. Her effort of today will probably improve her. The attendance showed a big increase over the I previous days of the week, due no doubt to the 1 moderation in weather conditions. The track was fast and the contests keen. This winners in a ma- i jority of instances being under sinew-straining drives to score by small margins. 1 Seventeen of the twenty carded went to the post In the opening rate, a dash of five and a half furlongs lor maiden two-year-olds. Starter Milton was particularly fortunate in sending them away to ; a splendid break. The linish was closely contested, ! with Bevelry James lasting to beat Half Rock a i nose. Bevelry James made most of the pace and huijg oil with determination under a drive. Half : Hock was the medium of a plunge that reduced i i ! lin io l to 20 to 1. He came from the rear division and was overtaking the winner with every stride. Duke of Dunbar was only beaten a bead for second place. The Oklahoma sprinter Useeit proved best of the big field of platers in the second race. Sha was ridden by the diminutive Louder and camt from behind to win by a scant length from Dr. Dougherty. The Trenton .Selling Stakes, a dash of five anil a half furlongs for two-year-olds, brought out the snmllest field of the afternoon. There were on:.v lour starters, with Alliena and Gloaming coupled.
