EXPECTS SPORT TO EXPAND p J DWYER FORESEES GREAT IMPROVEMENT IMPROVEMENTIN IN NEW YORK RACING CONDITIONS Veteran Owner of Gravcsend and Aqueduct Tracks TracksExpresses Expresses Idea That New York Seasons Will WillEe Ee Lengthened Next Year New York April 4 Yes raring is gradually coming back to us said Phil J Dwyer owner of the liravesend and Aqueduct tracks in an inter ¬ view Everything points to a big season around New York but his does not mean that the asso ¬ ciations are going to declare big dividends next winter or that the earnings will ever be as big as they were up to seven years ago iBnt contin ¬ ued Mr Dwyer ve can expect enough public siipixirt to make it worth our while to offer good stakes We made expenses last year at Aque ¬ duct Mr Dwyer then talked of his recent visit lo the Gravfsend track and of the numlKr of good horses that are in training It is several years since we had those conditions and it indicates a goud season around here 1 understand that there are more horses at the local tracks than we have had in several years Do yearsDo yon think the time is near when all the local race courses will IK in operation again he was asked askedWell Well I cant answer that offhand replied Mr Dwyer hut we must expect application for dates from all of them if things continue to go along as well as at present Of course just now it would be rather hard to give cveryliody dates bocausa of the racing in Maryland which opens In April and continues almost to the end of May It wouldnt pay us now to conllict with Maryland because of i lie more liberal policy that prevails at those tracks and we might find it hard to get the horse owners here Hut by next year 1 think con dilous will change and while I dont know just what is gong to transpire it may be necessary to opeir earlierami close laterr that is if more local tracks will operate Conditions may improve so much as to make it possible to conflict with one or more of the Maryland trucks without any disad ¬ vantage to either because there would be enough horses to race at both places We coidd race at Gravesond at short notice but really I cant say what will he done at this course I say ihis know ¬ ing that it is for me to decide whether there will lie racing there next season If I thought it ad ¬ visable to race there this year I surely wouldnt lie at Aqueduct which is harder to reach than Graveseud GraveseudMr Mr Dwyer would not enter into a discussion re ¬ garding the betting situation He says as do all trad owners that the associations ar not inter ¬ ested in betting He doesnt believe that the sys ¬ tem that was used in New Orleans this winter would be tolerated her and he was just as cer ¬ tain tliat there wasnt going to be any display of money on the lawns where the socalled layers congregate He admitted that he had discussed tlm matter with other men at the head of racing mid made it emphatic when he said that nothing was going to be permitted that would in any way jeopardize the sport Things seemed to go along nil right last year said he and I dont believe there is going to be much difference this season If some people violate the law they will have to take their medicine medicineThis This veteran patron of the turf harnt conducted a big racing establishment in about 15 years and it is many years since his colors were seen I have always l en a real enthusiast over thorough ¬ bred racing concluded Mr Dwycr When I had a string of horses I always had a home juar the truck and was out of bed as early as any stable boy I would get out on the course and see the horses work and in this way always knew the conditon of the runners It kept me in good health sis I was in the open all the time Mid let me say that I had to go to bed with the chickens 4very evening or I could not have been up with the railbirds at sunrise There are lots of owners at present who do the same thing
