GREAT HORSES IN KENTUCKY HANDICAP Prominent Eastern Stables to Make Strong Bid for 10000 Stake at Douglas Park Louisville Ky pril 21 Tbe cast is going to make the strongest liid for the rich Kentucky Handicap to be run the opening day at Douglas 1ark This meeting will begin May 22 and con ¬ tinue for thirteen days ending on June 5 Fifteen out of the liftyseven horses entered for this big race are distinctly eastern horses This year is tli first time in a generation that eastencrs have entered liberally in the stakes to be run on the Kentucky circuit In the long ago when racing was firmly established on the eastern tracks and it was there that the big money was hung up those easterners who had stock farms in Kentucky or whose horses had wintered in the blue grass pastures would essay to take a Jling at the western racing fixtures But it was a rare event indeed for any of the big men to ship their horses to Kentucky to race The American Derby and a few othqr big races at Chicago and the Worlds Fair Handicap at St Lous attracted them in Koodly numbers for there was real big money to be won in one of those events but they shunned the ordinary Kentucky racing racingThis This year with three 10000 stakes at Douglas Park Latouia and Churchill Downs it is different The 10000 stake offerings have been the greatest thing the Kentucky tracks ever have had hadJames James Butler millionaire merchant of New York arid Harry Payne Whitney famous polo player and allround sportsman and the Qnincy Stable wjll all make an effort to win the Ken ¬ tucky Handicap These three stables will have a chanco to choose from three candidates or start all t f tbem if they so desire Mr Butler will havo three sensational twoyearolds of last year to choose front They are Keiituckyboru andbred but it will be essentially an eastern victory if one of them wins the big prize Mr Butler bought the entire crop of yearlings of the Keene establishment at Kingston Kami in 191 nt a price reported to have been around 50000 In their one season on the tnrf they won about 70000 for their owner so they have paid for themselves and the expense of keeping them for a year and Mr Butler starts out the season with a strong racing stable on a clean sheet sheetHarry Harry Payne Whitney will be represented in the Kentucky Handicap by two horses brought back from England These are Borrow and Harmonicon both of which raced in England successfully Borrow was recn In this country last year but Harmonicon has never raced on this side of the Atlantic The former went to the post live times in this country won twice was second twice and was outside the money in his first start Bor rows two winning races were good enough to es ¬ tablish the son of Hamburg and Forget as a high rlass race horse His first victory was in the Yoiikers Handicap at Empire City in which he defeated Buckhorn Meridian Uncle Mini Black Toney and Lahore traveling a mile and a six tenth in 141 a new track record He carried 121 pounds that day His next victory was in the Saratoga Handicap one mile and a quarter when he carried 12 pounds and beat Hedge Flying Fairy Figinny and Buckhorn the time being 205 That was his last race of the year Harinonicon won many races in England last year chiefly at sprinting distance and it is ii question us to whether he can travel a mile and a quarter Pandean the other Whitney eligible for the race is a good race horse but on last years form hardly compares with Borrow BorrowThe The Qulncy Stable will send Trojan the Fu ¬ turity winner Double Eagle and Qnliicy after the big prize prizeBut But the eastern horse which will have to he reckoned with and which is getting a special preparation for the race is the champion Hoamer He surely was a great horse last year Itoamer Is being prepared by A J Goldsboroiigh who made such a wonderful record with him last year Butwell has been engaged to ride him in this race which means he will have a capable pilot Goldsboroiigh lias a candidate for the Ashland Oaks in Lady Kotha He will send her to Ken ¬ tucky for the race in charge of one of his as ¬ sistants preferring to stay in the east and keep his eye on Itoamer Other eastern horses in the race are Andrew M Embroider Buskin and Norse King KingBut But the west is not willing to concede the race to the east Trainer John F Schorr has a stable full of chances and Hobcrt L Baker has gathered together the greatest racing string of his career Mr Schorr won the stake last year and he has no less than six strings to his l ow this seiir m with Luke McLnke David Craig Ed Crump Lindcnthal Star Shooter and Soldirest Boy BoyR R L Baker has John Gtiml Latonla Derby winner Doctor Samuel Canadian Derby winner Constant Pif Jr and Emerson Cocliran si three yearold Workouts at Lexington show that Brad leys Choice which was on the shelf all of last year has returned to his good twoyearold form which will make him a dangerous contendor And Black Toney must be reckoned with when it conies to figuring out chances The big black colt will give any of them a rtiu when be is right Trainers with horses in the race are scurry In about looking for the best possible riding material and not only will the best horses of the country compete at Douglas Park in this event but they will lie piloted by the most skilful riders in the country countryDouglas Douglas Pnri is such a new plant and has always liccn kept in such spickandspaii condition that Manager Hachmeistor never has to make many im ¬ provements The plan is capable of taking care of enormous crowds and will not be taxed to its utmost by the big thrtfng which will be on hand to sec the third running of the Kentucky Handi
