WHITNEY STARS EXPECTED AT LOUISVILLE Regret and Prince Henry Likely to Represent Eastern Stable in Kentucky Derby Louisville Ky April 20 Trainer James Rowo js expected to arrive at Churchill Downs this week with II P AVhittieys groat stable which includes throe Kentucky Derby candidates in Regret Spun Glass and Prince Henry It is believed that Hie AVhilney cdors in the Derby will be carried by the unbeaten filly Regret and the gelding Prince Henry The latter won the Grab Bag Handicap at Piping Rocfc last season in which he nosed1 out Captain E B Cassatts Trial by Jury with C K G Billings Lampoon onlv a short ne k away He is reported to have wintered finely and to have done good work in training this spring Horsemen here are eager for the Whitney stable to roach the Downs and to judge from their appearance just how the three j earolds of this string compare with the stars of the James Butler string stringJamts Jamts MaiManns an excellent judge of a good horse and a wellposted student of racing form thinks thit if anything i in the way of Mr Butlers aspirations in the Kentucky Derby this spring the opposition will come from the AAhit ney stable He was heard to express himself a few days ago that ho saw Pebbles at one time last seasonat Saratoga when he believed lie could give any twoyearold that raced in Kentucky last reason fifteen pounds and a beating There are some equally good judges who question Pebbles staying ability Undoubtedly this suspicion is lie cause the handsome bay colt has such a phenomenal turn of sprinting siieed They forget that Old Rosebud possessed the same sort of speed and moreover they have overlooked the fact that Peb ¬ bles comes on the sire side from a great line of stayers lifs sire Ben Brush having won tho Ken ¬ tucky Derby while his grandslrc Bramble was the greatest cup horse of his day Brambles sire Bonnie Scotland never got a good horse that could not run well over a considerable distance of ground groundThe The Lexington meeting so far has shown up some of the Kentucky Derby candidates as possessing pretentious to class that wore heretofore regarded as hardly anything but soiling platers Another feature of the racing of Derby entries there is the fact that most of those candidates have stood their training well and1 are apparently in sound racing couditou This Insures as has been claimed all along that the field that goes to the post to contest the big stake this season may out ¬ number any that lias ever faced the barrier In the fortyone seasons the groat race has IHMMI run runThe The following names have IKMI accepted by the Jockey Club for the English broil twoyearolds in tin stable of Jefferson Livingston which were selected in England for that turfman by trainer P T Chlnn last season as yearlings Some of these youngsters will make their racing debut during the coming mooting at the Downs in tho Bashford Manor Debutante and Juvenile stakes stakesBockna Bockna b c by Troiitbeck St not ho surprising if this collection of royally bred importations should de ¬ velop tlie champion twoyearold of 1915 Th y are surely a fine looking lot of youngsters and compare most favorably with the twoyearolds of any stable at present in training in Kentucky or elsewhere elsewhereProbably Probably the most spectacular of all American race horses now In training has arrived bore from New York and is quartered at the Churchill Downs track This is the sensational fouryearold Roam ¬ er champion threeyearold of 1914 This mighty fouryearold owned by Andrew Miller a promi ¬ nent member of the Jockey Club arrived here Saturday in company with seven other members of this turfmans string one of which is tlio good filly Lady Botha which is an eligible to the Kentucky Derby Lady Rotha is also engaged in the Kentucky Oaks which will Iw run on Irlday May 21 All of the Miller horses appear to have wlutorojl well and both Roamer and Lady Rotha especially appear to be in robust condition Roamer probably will make his first appearance under colors during the coming New Louisville Jockey Club spring meeting in the historic Clark lUmdi cap which will be run off on Saturday May 15 Those who are well acquainted with the racing done by Roamer last season say that he never looked better than at the present time and they expect him to prove this season the same sort of a champion as a fouryearold that he was last season He is not a flashy horse to look at and does not at first Impress a horseman with his greatness but from all accounts he is one of the wonders of present day racing and is conceded to have shown in his races more speed lust year than any horse that carried colors with the possible exception of tho Kentucky Dorbr winner of 1914 Old Rosebud Trainer A T Golds borough who has Roamer Lady Rotha and the rest of the Miller horses in charge stated that Mr Miller would be here on Derby day and remain in this city until after Roamer makes his debut as HandicapThere a fouryearold In the Clark Handicap There was some fair work over a drying out track by several Derby candidates at the Downs Sunday Two of James Butlers stars Pebbles and Kilkenny iBoy were sent a mile in 140 and wore pulled up a mile and an eighth together In 201 They went the first eighth in 12 the quarter in 25 three furlongs in IS the half in 52 five furlongs in 105 sis furlongs In 11 and seven furlongs in 132 Kilkenny Boy remained a couple of lengths behind Pebbles in tlie early part of the work and joined him in the final three furlongs The son of Ben Brush was worked by trainer Benson without the blinkers blinkersO O M Millers Kentucky Derby candidate For Fair went seveneighths in 1 23 covering the first six furlongs in l17f This son of Fair Play could surely have worked fast as twice during the first six furlongs his rider pulled him up almost to a canter He has already made many friends with the rnllbirds since his arrival here hereT T E Maddens Konutucky Derbv candidate Sam MeMeekin rather disappointed the horsemen In his trial He started in to work a mile and a quarter the Derby route with jocko Brady and after stepping off the first eighth In fourteen and reach ¬ ing the threeeighths post in 39 K bolted to the outside fence with Brady and had to be pullod up He was then cooled out and his trainer again put Brady up aud in company with a pace ¬ maker to keep the son of McGee toward the rail was sent seven furlongs in 133 the first six furlongs being run In 118 It is to be re ¬ gretted that this grand looking colt has developed a sourness for the track It lias always lieen under ¬ stood that even as a twoyearold lie had a tendency to bear out In his work He is one of the best looking threeyearolds in training and it may be that a different rider will Ivo able to handle him so as to make him race well wellTwo Two other noted horses wore each rent a mile at a rating gait they being the fouryearolds Bronzowing and Bolloc both of which had to quit the turf early last season as throeyearolds Bronzewiug went a mile In lr 2 and Bolloc worked the same distance in 154 So far both these noted performers are training soundly soundlyWord Word has come to the Downs to reserve seven stalls for the string of Sohuyler L Parsons whose horses are now at Lexington in charger of trainer W II Karrick Two of these are the Kentucky Derby candidates Phosphor aud Sharpshooter which are regarded as certain starters in the classic and will liu ridden in that event bv the noted jockeys T Loftus and J Butwell While on ac ¬ count of sickness Mr Parsons probably will not get to Lexington lief ore next week when tlie yearling sales take place he expects to be In at ¬ tendance at those sales aud Is sure to come here In time for the Derby which is to be decided one week from the coming Saturday SaturdayJoe Joe Young has arrived at the Downs from Juarez with John Rtardon which he ersiiiided a friend to purchase for him from Roy Martin John Bear dun won a string of races at Juarez and at the close of the meeting there was regarded as the best of the handicap division at any distance over a mile The only other horses that came with John Reardon was the twoyearold Savino shipped here by his owner G Barnes who purchased him during the winter from A B Spreckles Like John shapePresident Ronrdon Savino arrived here iii good shape President Charles F Grainger was aliout the stables at the Downs In company with Lawrence Jones who is one of the racing firm of Middleton Jones newcomers to the running turf They visited the Miller stable to look over Roamer and Lady Rotha and the Butler stable whore they In ¬ spected the Kentucky Derby candidates Pebbles Last Coin and Kilkenny Ioy Mr Jones is one of tho best judges of horseflesh in Kentucky and lias long been prominent7 as the owner of groat show horses that have won prizes In all the big horse shows in the conn try of recent years Now that hi1 has iocjmio Interested in a racing string there is no telling how extensive his turf venture may become as he is a man who wants the best of anything he Is interested in Tho parimutuel system of betting on running races which had its inaugura ¬ tion in recent as well as early days In Kentucky at Churchill Downs is in a great measure respons ¬ ible for the entry of so many now local men of capital In racing It has furnished a revenue to the tracks that has made possible rich stakes as well as purses and has eliminated the plunging gambler of the did bookmnking times and made racing the greatest of all outdoor sports hereabouts Messrs Middletun Jones have some likely two yearold racing material in training at the Downs one of which is the brown colt Vancedor and the other the chestnut filly Lady Always The former a son of Transvaal Is eligible to the Bashford Manor and Juvenile Slakes and the latter filly I idy Al ¬ ways a daughter of Peter Quince is a candidate for Debutante Stakes honors Their many local friends are wishing them every good fortune in their turf venture this season seasonJohn John W Schorr has given his twoyearold hay colt by f tar Shoot Babbie the name Rllle Shooter One of his other promising sous of Star Shoot out of Planutess lie has named for a well known merchant of this city John W Klein who has long boon a patron of the sport and who rarely misses a race that Is run at Churchill Downs DownsJ J C Calm who has the distinction of having trained both a Kentucky Derby and a Kentucky Oaks winner in Typhoon II and Crocket respectively has only one horse in training at present and that performer is now at Churchill Downs It is the good twoyearold winner of last season Martinos which has not been raced since last fall Calm having laid him by for the winter Martinos is in good training form having wintered superbly and will no doubt make a useful performer this season for his St Louis owner Calm is at present i at Lexington and may pick up a yearling or two at the big sales there next week If he finds anything to suit his fancy at a reasonable price priceThe The arrangements at the Downs for the In ¬ stallation of the parimutuel machines under grand stand for the club house patrons is a decided Improvement over the old boxes sot lip in that part of the building Regular quarters for sotting the machines have been arranged at the end of tho stand next to tho clubhouse anil that bnild iur ioiued to the grand stand with a covered platform which makes it possible In rainy weather for the ladies and their escorts to pass back aud forth between the two buildings without any dis ¬ comfort no matter how inclement the weather may be The stands In this building consist of two structures joined together in one of which tickets are sold
