PROBABLE CLARK HANDICAP STARTERS David Craig May Represent the Schorr Static Jim Gaffneys Success as a Sire SireLouisville Louisville Ky May 13 As the running of the Clark Handicap draws near it is plainly to be dis ¬ cerned that like the Kentucky Derby there will probably IKJ more starters than ever before went to the post in its long history since 1502 when it was made a race for threeyearolds and over The class is high this season although annually it has always brought out one of the star liulds o the year An enormous crowd is expected to be on hand Saturday to see the Clark Handicap run As On Derby Day excursion rates on all the railroads leading into tlie city from all points in Kentucky are available and the tickets allow considerable privilege on re ¬ turning dates Every effort is being made by Man ¬ ager Wiuu and President Grainger to make the afternoon another big society day and the scene around the clubhouse will be almost as spectacular as it was on Derby Day Indications are that in spite of his top weight Roamer will figure as the favorite in the race with Short Grass probably a strong second choice choiceIt It is to be regretted that Luke McLuke the crack of John W Schorrs stable will not go to the post as his owner does not think he is up to a hard race at the present time It is hinted also that right now trainer Schorr thinks the In ¬ ternational Dorby winner of last year David Craig can make a better showing than Luke McLuke could now at the weight and in fact it is stated by those assuming to know that his owner thiiiKS the fouryearold son of Peep o Day has a great chance to capture the race One of the best hacked horses of thii west will be Hodge which though recently beaten in a close finish by Bradley s Choice was regarded by Jiis stable as then not quite up to his best form If he runs in the Clark Handicap like lie did last year in the Derby with Old Rosebud he may at last reward his followers for his many disappointments pastO of the past O A Blanch lias so far in Jim Gaffney a sire that has yet to send to the post a single horse which has failed to win Last season the only two starters by him were Jim Savage and Emerson Cochran The former won three straight races in his twoyearold form and among the winning per ¬ formances of Emerson Cochrau was the Cincinnati Trophy The only starter by Jim Gaffney so far this season is Dodge which is already a winner at the Downs and conceded to be a filly of good class by all those best Informed as to her real merits These arc the only three horses by this son of Golden Garter that have as yet faced the starting barrier There are but two other youngsters of Dodges age in training One of these is Franklin out of Gliding By a colt owned by Weber Ward and the other is a filly out of Rebel Queen QueenBianchi Bianchi has three handsome colts by Jim GaT ney which arc now sucklings One is a brother to Emerson Cochrau another is a bay colt out of Amy C by Watcrcolor and the other a chest ¬ nut colt out of Irish Queen by Beatcatcher The brother to Emerson Cochran Is a bay in color Dodge and Franklin by this horse were both bred by W F Schulte of this city who was at one time president of the New Louisville Jockey Club They are both out of mares that raced success ¬ fully in Schultes colors Sonic twenty mares have been mated with Jim Gaffuey this season Among those of note are Silk Day Gold Rose THHes Nightmare Negligee and Pepita tlie latter the dam of Baby Cal What makes Jim Gaffneys progeny all race well is the fact that he not only sires youngsters of good quality but colts and fillies of fully average size as well It scums now that lie will in the next few years to come put shine in the stud his brother Golden Maxim a horse that for his chances in Virginia has done re ¬ markably well as a sire HQ sired a really good mare in Follie Levy and Presumption and Royal Captive by him did some good racing In every season they have been on the turf The latter 5s now in the stud but Presumption is still in train ¬ ing at the Downs DownsGallahcr Gallahcr Brothers report that they have a year ¬ ling brown filly half sister to Little Sister the win ¬ ner of the Debutante Stakes This youngster is by Duval which ran second to Worth In the Ken ¬ tucky Derby of 1012 They have no suckling this year out of Little Sisters dam Centre Shot she proving barren last year to Trap Rock She lias been bred back this spring to that son of the Epsom Derby winner Rock Sand SandStarter Starter Harry Morrissey has as his assistants on the Kentucky tracks this season James Osborrie James Donovan Milton Page and Harry Ktishcn They will remain with him during his engagements this spiring and next summer at both Douglas Park and Latouia as well as at the Downs though on June 25 Osborne will have to go to northern Canada where he will as usual work during the summer as starter at the tracks in that portion of the Do ¬ minion Osborne like Morrissey was long connected with starter Mars Cassidy in the position of as ¬ sistant sistantWhile While here to start Norse King in the Ken ¬ tucky Derby Max Hirsch made known that his mare Taboo is now in the stud at Hamburg Place and had become the property of J B Madden A number of good judges in the breeding business have looked on this marc with wishful eyes as a prospective brood marc as her blood lines are ex ¬ cellent and her racing was always good when she was asked to go a mile or over Hirsch thinks she is a mare that will some day throw a Derby winner and had he been a wealthy man he would not have parted with her herTho Tho once noted rider Monk Overton who one day at Washington Park Chicago fyears ago rode six winners in the same afternoon all his mounts for that day has another chanco in tlie training line lie having interested a Chicago lover of racing with a good bank account and has been deputized to pick up a good horse or two during the racing at the local tracks this spring Whan he was riding with great success and making money he established a good home in Chicago for his mother and now during the winter he stays in that city lie has two horses In view to buy and Is waiting tlie return of their owner to this city to get an answer to bis offer
