BECOMING INTERESTED IN CALIFORNIA Movement to Reestablish Racing Making Progress Jockey Archibald Halted in Holland San Francisco CaL May 15 Definite announce ¬ ment of a running meeting at the exposition is ex ¬ pected next week One of the most pretentious gatherings of horsemen in California since the pause was killed in 1910 was at the St Francis Hotel yesterday Among those present were A B Spreckcls Henry T Huiitlngton Jr George J Grout Charles T Boots Harry Tevls Frank Uuh staller II I Wilson Porter Ashe John R Thornby Henry Force Cutting Henry Hogan Harry Griffin 1 W Comstock and a host of others These men represent wealth and Influence in the state and the movement to revive thoroughbred racing is attain ¬ ing some results on a sound basis Owing to the nlKonce of Charles W Clark R J Mackenzie and other sponsors of the turf revival chairman James C Nealou was unable to tnke action in organization of the jockey club Tentative plans have been made to hold the exposition race meeting from September 7 to October 12 The jockey club prom ¬ ises to be a permanent organization and not simply I for the purpose of conducilng races at the exposi ¬ tion Tlie prominent men behind the movement ex ¬ pect to have affairs so shaped that several meetings will be held on the tracks In California next year According yearAccording to a dispatch from Reno the thirty days meeting there will open on July 17 W W Finn has been secured to manage tint opening nieot ing under the parlmutuol law in Nevada Reno will follow Denver with purses not less than 200 and several 1000 and 2000 stake features featuresGeorge George Archibalds mother who resides in Oak ¬ land has some apprehension for the safety of her son and Teddy Ames the other American rider who accompanied Archibald to ride on the German turf this year They left here two weeks ago with Archi ¬ balds wife and infant daughter and yesterdav a cablegram came from Archibald to his mother from Amsterdam Holland as follows Arrived safe All well Am awaiting develop ¬ ments here hereMrs Mrs Archiliiild takes this to mean that the jockeys are waiting to hear whether Americano are being warned to leave Germany or not Archibald went to Germany at the earnest request of Baron Oppeubciiu to fulfill his contract
