WORKING FOR CALIFORNIA RACING San Francisco Cal May 21 Mrs Anita Bald ¬ win mistress of Santa Anita Ranch near Los Angeles and daughter of the late E J Lucky Baldwin is interested in the revival of the turf in California She put her shoulder to the wheel today by signing the subscription list that contains the names of many of Californias most prominent and wealthy citizens Whatever the others give jou can put me down for Mrs Baldwin told Chairman James C Nealou I love the horse and want to see him return to popular favor favorThe The work of organizing the jockey club that Is fathering the revival movement has been halted agalu Charles W Clark who is slated to be presi ¬ dent of the club lias been detained at San Mateo because of the illness of his wife who presented him with a baby girl a couple of weeks ago Just as soon as he is able to attend a meeting will be called and the club will be permanently organized organizedRumor Rumor lias It that the proposed meeting at the Exposition track which follows the close at Reno late in August will be enlivened with wager ¬ ing on the system in force in New York The exposition officials will naturally not take a hand in the venture but the Jockey Club will have entire charge of arranging and running the meeting The track is located in the Presidio reservation govern ¬ ment property and it Is said that no one In authority will offer any objection to a bit of quiet wageriiiK on the results This however is a matter that will not be discussed for the po ¬ litical party hi power at present is dead set against raising the bars on race track wagering wageringGeorge George Winglield the Nevada racing lenflcr is a visitor in San Francisco He says Nevada and Colorado are strong for racing Reno will open on July 17 and Wingheld says it promises to be a banner affair witli pnrimutuols in operation operationW W P Maxwell known to horsemen all over the eonntrv was engaged all ylntcr in constructing the Exposition race track which is pronounced one of the fastest in the country He received a letter from a friend yesterday to go to Tia Juana to look over the situation relative to building a track but ho is not going until something more definite turns up
