DETAILS OF PALMETTO PARK FIRE. The grandstand, paddock, judges stand and about 20t stalls were destroyed by the lire which visited tin Palmetto Lark race track at Charleston. S. ".. early Tuesday morning. The 1 ss is estimated between 0,000 and 940,000, ball of which was covered by insurance. Four large barns, numerous ad-jacent houses and 000 additional Stable stalls wen-saved by the Charleston Ore department. It is believed thai the blaze started in the grandstand and that it was canned by defective wiring. A long died, 1 lit- bOUd walk and fencing were also saved. A small Mann- on the grandstand was noticed at liiM. and this rapidly grew into a mass of tire. Me wooden structure burning like tinder. The paddock and connecting stables, also ,f wood, were quickly destroyed. o effort was made to save the grand stand, the tire being beyond control before the tire fighting apparatus arrived. The grandstand was built four years ago at a cost of .7. xiO. The en tire plant, exclusive of the groaads, cost appi i matel.v 50,000. It was owned and operated |,v the Charleston Lair and Racing Association. It is not likely that the stand will be rebuilt, at least In tin-near . future.
