. HOPE FOR FUTURE CALIFORNIA RACING. San Francisco. Cal.. September 25. The twenty five days of racing held al the Lxposifon race track came to a suei 1 ssfal end here last Saturday. The attendance tbroaghtoat the meeting was big and tin- sport furnished was above the usual standard. The members of tin- GoMea bate Thoroughbred Breeders Association, an organization composed of more than seventy of the most inllueiitial citizens of California, conducted the meeting and il was a liiianoi.il success, even though there was nothing more than oral bettiag, which was not sanctioned by he Association. During tin- meeting the Association distributed a little more than 0,000 to Ihe horsemen, and Charles YY. Clarke, president of the body, personally gave a ,000 handicap. There were a number of s|mmj.iI rases lor army otliocls and these created considerable interest among government folks. In these races, which numbered four, beautiful cups were donated by leading citizens to the army officers riding the winning horses. A special race was ;il-ii on the card, in which memlH-rs of the police department had the mounts. The thoroughbred meeting proved one of the leading sporting attractions of the Lanama-Laeilic lu hf 1 national BKponltiona varied program, and more money was made out of this meeting than any other sporting event that has taken place at the Exposition to date, including the Vanilerbill and Grand Prix automobile races, which drew banner crowds. The success of the mooting has given followers of thoroughbred racing renewed hopes that the s|*,rt will be again restored in California, under more favorable conditions than prevailed when it was in its heyday in Ihe Golden State. The interest in racing in California is as keen now as it was when the sport of kings was killed in this slate in 1011. The people are for it and they showed their fondness for it by turning out in generous numbers at the relent meeting. It seems assured now that there will be racing ill California next spring, as the onhewja or the Golden Cite Thoroughbred Breeders Association plan to boh] a meeting at Tanfoma track, in San Mateo, a thirty minutes ride from this city. There is some talk of holding a race meeting al Ixis Angeles, as there are a number of prominent men of that community anxious to promote it. hut it is doubtful if there is enough time left to get Santa Anita Lark track or the Ascot Lark track ready. The former tracks grandstand was burned down come time ago. The next spring meeting of the Golden Gate Thoroughbred Breeders Association will be held without betting. The otlicials of the Association will endeavor to have the legislature pass a bill in 1017 permitting pari inutuel bettiag.
