HAVRE DE GRACE MEETING PROSPERS. Stromboli Defeats Slumber II. and Tartar in the Old Bay Handicap. Balttasare, Md.. September 25.— The old Lay Handicap, which was offered as the feature M this aftert ns card, resulted in a spectacular and thrilling contest, in which August Belmonts Strom boll was returned the winner over Slumber II. and Tartar. The Held, which embraced some of the beat horses stabled at the course, was dispatched ! • a goad start and the lightly weighted Tartar showed the way for the best part of the way. The w inner was kept under restraint until taken to the outside of the leaders at the eighth post. Then, racing into the lead, he drew away at the end. Slumber 11. gained second place from Tartar in the closing strides by the shortest of margins. The time for Ihe race. 1:12--.. created a new track record. On the whole I lie aid was probably the best offered since the opening of the meeting. The usual six race program was down for decision and stirring snort was the order throughout the alter noon. Ideal weather coadltJona accounted for the presence of a large ami enthusiastic crowd. In the opening dash a "good thing" failed to materialize, when Joe L.lair was beaten a short nose on the iMist by Hanson, alter being backed heavily. Ailing for L. S. Thompson. Mr. Melntyre brings the information that many improvements will be noticed at the Hamilton course following the installaion of the inutuel machiaea next spring. Thirty nine layers cut in this afternoon, the largest number since the commencement of the meeting. Iltrdey. a colt in the Thompson stable, did not spread his foot as reported the other day. He polled up quite lame, which accounted for the report. Applications for 075 stalls have been received by Harry White, who has charge of the allotment of stable room at the Laurel course That there will be no shortage of horses is quite evident. Several of the smaller stables that have parti cipated in the present meeting will ship to Trou ton to take part in the running races to be held in conjunction with the state fair at tiiat place. W. 11. Mizell received word today that Junker J. Smyth would report on Monday morning to ride out the remainder of the Maryland season. Smyth has been under call to the Seagram stable during the past summer on tho Canadian circuit ami has been showing good form. Gad Bryan, one of the moving spirits of the Louie tr.-nk. was a lirsltiino visitor at Havre de Grace this afternoon. Mr. Bryant lias only recently recovered from an operation for appendicitis. Top Hat. one of August Belmonts jumpers, wrenched his ankle badly this morning and was scratched from the steeplechase. The owners of steeplechase stables have not given lip hope of having the Laurel management put on cross-count ty racea lor the meeting which is to open next Friday. A petition that has been numerously nigned asking for such races was presented to the management today. The horsemen ate so eager for the crosscountry racing that they have agreed themselves to build a coarse, should permission be granted by the Maryland State Fair As sociation. St. oplcchasitig has always been tremendously popular in Maryland.
