TEE CAULFIELD GUINEAS VICTOR. Patrobas Caullield CbjflMM was a triumph f r Carbine blood, both the first and second. Patrobas and Rossanna. being by Wallace, one of the greatest Australian-brill sons of the rare old sire of Spearmint. Slight odds were laid on Patrobas, which he justified by beating Rossanna by a length. The winner belongs to a lady. Mrs. E. A. Widdes. He earned a fourteen-pnund penalty in the Caultield Cup. iu which he was at the bottom of the handicap, one of a larger number handicapped with only 01 pounds. He is also iu the Melbourne Cup with 01 pounds, but for that race, which is run on Xovember 2. he apparently escapes a penalty — l enalties being only for handicaps, or for winners of the Australian Jockey Club or Victoria Racing Club Derbys. As a stallion Wallace, the sire of Iatrobas. has done great things, and at the close of the Australian racing year at the end of July he stood sixth on the list of winning sires. The two Bill of Portland horses. Maltster and Bohadil. were first and second, with Positauo by Bill of Portlands sire. St. Simon third. Wallace has sired many big winners in Australia, inclusive of Trafalgar twice winner of the Victorian. Xew Zealand and Tasmanian Champion Stakes i and of Emir, which likewise won that event. Kingsbiirgh. the winner of last ears Melbourne iup js j,, j v Wallace. which has sired five Victoria Racing Club Derby winners iu F. J. A.. Lady Wallace. Mountain King. Wilari and Wolawa. four winners of the Oaks and five winners of the St. Leger. His previous winners of the CaiiLield Guineas were Kinglike and I-adv Wallace, and Mountain King won the Australian Jockey Club Derbv for him. A big race he has yet to furnish the winner of is the Caullield Cup. ,
