, i ■ : ! I TRIBUTE TO AN AMERICAN TRAINER. Jail; Joyner was mighty well thought of when trainiug horses in this country. When he went over to England, to train there to? Mr. Whitney, he took his popularity alo:: and had not been at Newmarket long before he bad won the warm regard of all with whom he came in c. intact. On this point W. B. Allison recently wrote: "Referring to trainers. I am reminded that tonight is the dinm-r at the Subscription Rooms Club, given by the Newmarket trainers in honor of Joyner, who is leaving for America next month. I do not think 1 have ever known a ease when a newcomer to a conipartivcly close borough became such a universal favorite as Joyner. Oth -r American trainers have been at Newmarket, and Jacob Pincus was very much liked. So. too. was Iluggins. but I think none of them quite assimilated himself to his surroundings so easily and naturally as Joynrr has done, and there is not a man. woman or child in Newmarket, and in the wide raeincr circle, who will not ioin in the heartiest good wishes lor his future prosperity in his own i-c.Tintry." That dinner came off the night of October 14 and was quite an affair. The menu was of a character la insure any guest lioing well fed and was neatly reniinisient of tie horses trained by Joyner at Newmarker. C.mcerning this pleasing tribute London Sportsman of the next day said: "A pleasant function was enacted at the Subscription Rooms Club, Newmarket, on Wednesday evening, when Mr. A. J. Joyner. who is shortly to return to America, was entertained at a farewell banquet by his fellow trainers. Lord Lonsdale presided, and was supported in the vice-chair by th Hon.
