1 * HOLIDAYS DAY OF VICTORY DEFEATS SHORT GRASS IN THE FEATURE RACE ON PIMLICOS CARD. The English Colt Benevolent Takes A Race and Is Promptly Bid Dp — Tribolo and Stellarina Claimed When Beaten. Baltimore. Md., November 5. — Archibald Bark-lies Holiday accounted for the Govans Handicap, the feature race at Pimlico this afternoon. He was ridden by J. McTaggart, made all the pace and beat Short Grass by three-quarters of a length. Short Grass was a heavily backed favorite, but But-well made the mistake of keeping him too close up in the early running, and when called on in thu homestretch be was unable to respond with his usuul burst of soeed. Interesting contests were in order and the large crowd present enjoyed the sport. Benevolent, winner of the fourth race, was bid up 05 over his entered price of 00 and was bought in. Saii Louis was responsible for tl»e bidding. There were two claims in the third race. Emil Herz taking Tribolo for 50 and the Mizpah Stable lost Stellarina to J. W. Hedrick, Jr.. for the same price. J. O. Byrne purchased Hedonist after his nice today aud will ship him to Cuba to take part iu the winter meeting at Havana. The clubs share of the runup money today will be added to the purses tomorrow ami no purse will lie of less value than 00. Joe-key Carroll, who is looking after the string that W. R. Coe purchased during the past summer and fall, came up from Belmont Park to enjoy a days racing. Carroll reports that the Vie horses in splendid condition and he regards Mr. Coes English importations highly. The horses Rustling Brass aud Laird o* Kirkcaldy, which were missing from the Sam Louis stable for a collide of days, were found five miles from their stable yesterday. Trainer Bnrttschell had the pair turned ont in a paddock adjoining his l«rn and, it is thought, that some one opened a gate and turned them loose. J. W. Pangle has acquired the contract on the apprentice rider C. Watson and will take the lad to Cuba with him this winter. Watson rode several races for T. J. Healey, who predicts that he will develop into a good rider. John San ford, who has been taking part in the Maryland meetings, left for his home in Amsterdam, N. V., this afternoon. The Sanford horses will lie shipped from the Helming track to the Hurricana farm at Amsterdam on Monday, to go into winter quarters. Robert Sievier, publisher of the Winning Post, of London, England, and owner at one time of that good mare, Sceptre, was a visitor at Pimlico this afternoon. It was his first visit to an American course and he was much interested in the manner in which the races were conducted. He will ra-main over to see the English colt. Colonel Vennie. run in the Waklen Stakes tomorrow. Emil Herz today purchased the plater Ahara from J. W. Hedrick, who took him out of a selling race from James Fitzsimmons a few days back. The horses racing in the colors of Amos Turney. including Waterbass. will be disposed of shortly to dissolve a partnership. Madison Mitchell and Theodore Cook are interested in the ownership of these horses. Mr. Mitchell has been quite ill for some time and wishes to retire from the sport, hence the sale. Captain W. F. Presgrave has purchased the filly Lady Atkin, by Jack Atkin — Grail, and will retire her to the stud at his farm at Red Bank. N. J., where she will be mated to Dalhousie. Capt. Presgrave bred Grail, which was a frequent winner.
