Williams was cremated at 6al: laud last Monday. Long a sufferer from pulmonary 1 rouble, the d.-eea-ed recently la-carne afflicted with acute heart ailments, and heart failure was the direct cause of his death. lie was fifty-six years old. having been horn in Sacramento, Cat., December 9. 1S59. He was the sou of Thomas Hanford and Rebecca Bryant Williams, who went to California from the south. A practicing lawyer in El Dorado county in IS50. "Tom" Williams" father packed up and went lo Nevada, whore he was adeef.-d atloruey general in IS59. He accepted from a clienl. in lieu of a fee. shares in a mining claim that later lieca the Consolidated Virginia aud Consolidated California mines, owned principally by OBrien, Mackav and Flood. This trio of multimillionaires ultimatelv purchased Williams interest for 1915.sh,000,000. Had he retained his shares they would have been worth 5,000,000 to him. The younger Williams was first married in San Francisco to Miss Susie McMullin. They were divorced and on March 23. PtOl. he married .Miss Beatrice Steele, who, with two children, Thomas 1L, Jr., aged 13. aud Beatrice Steele Williams, aged 10. survive him. Mr. Williams attended the Iniversity of California for two years, but he left there in 1S79 for Santa Clara College, from which he graduated in 1S.S0. He then devoted his time to managing his fathers vast estates in the Sacramento aud San Joaquin valleys and also became a notable figure in racing. He had a taste for rare volumes and gathered one of th- choicest library collections in the west. Williams won national fame in the years of 1899 and 1900. when he wrested honors from Prince Pouiatowski, the Polish nobleman, in the famous racing war. The war develoi ed from the disputed supremacy of Williams by Pouiatowski. who established the Tanforan race track at San Mateo. When, in 1909. the race tracks in the state were put out of business by the legislature. Williams sold his large stable, dispo-ing of such racers as Firestone. Bubia Grande. Tom Hayward.
