.NEW ORLEANS TRACK FAST GOING IS SPEEDY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE MEETING OPENED. Cochran Two-Year-Olds Finish One, Two Again — Busy Joe, Gloaming, Tribolo and Africa Beau Take Their Races, .J New Orleans. La., January 5. — Improvement in tho general action at the Fair Grounds this afternoon, considering that it was an off day, was marked, and if it forecasts the future, then this will easily tank with pretentious summer meetings when the tourist travel drifts in this direction. Summerlike weather, a fast track and an improved card were factors that contributed to the enjoyment of the big concourse of spectators. First-time starters carried off the lions share of the purses. Some of the finishes were close and the early running keen. Gifford Cochran probably uncovered his best youngsters here in Flights Fancy and Yellow Sally. Both proved vastly superior to the other two-year-olds that ran in the opener, and had tnc race to themselves. Flights Fancy won and reduced the former track record of 35% seconds by one-fifth of a second. Busy Joe and Little "Jack" Brown both graduated from the maiden class in the second race. Gloam-ing. a tirst-time starter, having J. Butwell in the saddle, just managed to outstay the outsider. Iuck. in the third race, and Tribolo. another tirst-time starter, with Frank Keogh in the saddle, accounted for the fourth race. Africa Bean enabled F. Bobinson to score his first winning mount, when that racer landed the tifth purse in a sharp drive with tol. Ashmeade and Hedge Rcse. C. T. Ilenshall. general manager of the Mount Uoyal track at Montreal, was a visitor here today, having come from San Diego. The incompetent W. Moran will have an opportunity during the mornings of the next ten days to ln-come more proficient at the harrier, as starter Hade suspended him in the fourth race for that period for incompetency. Jockey McDeiinott was suspended for six days for disobedience at the post. There were several arrivals today from Havana, including jockey .1. Hanover, who will ride here during the remainder of the meeting. k~A »ne hundred and seventy-four stakeholders were reemployed this afternoon in the Palm Garden. Owners U. F. Carman and George Borkel were arrivals yesterday. The epidemic of light coughing that has been prevalent at the Fair Grounds has about spent itself and the bones are beginning to round into their best form. M. N.
