] I I i I I ; : , IMPORTED YOUNGSTERS SELL CHEAPLY. Belmont Bred Yearlings Do Not Win Favor, Not Having Recovered From Their Voyage. New York, January 21. -Seventeen two vear olds from August Belmont* Haras de Villers, in Prance, were sold at Din-lands last night for a tidal of 0,825. While they were all of Mr. Belmonts breed hag, it was made plain before the auction that Mr. Belmont was in no manner interested in the offerings, they having been sold before they were landed in this country. Ike real ownership of the horses wa* kept a cf.se secret, as has been, the case ever since they reached New Yolk, but it was widely intimated that Herbert L. Pratt and Joseph P. Davis had purchased them as a speculation, while other horsemen were named as being interested in the sale. The prices obtained were far below those paid for the yearlings of Clarence II. Mackav sold in the same ring last month, but the colts and fillies still showed the effects of their long trip across the Atlantic and most of them were too small to attract good prices. The In-st prices were paid by It. W. Walden, who was representing II. M. Maxwell of Key Mar. Md., and the fact that Mr. Maxwell is a brother-in-law to Mr. Davis created the impression that they were being bought in. Mr. Belmont, who was present, took a fancy to Bright Kjrea when that fillv was brought into" tie ring. She is by Pthelberl Juelle Eel Folic and. though small, is good looking. Her dam was the winner of the French Oaks and Mr. Belmont paid 88 for her. After the French two-year-olda had been disposed of. one two-year old and five three year-olds by English sires were sold for Fdward Johnson, who brought them to this country. They were bred at Langdoa Hill Stud in England and were a good-looking lot and well bred. There was no demand at all for them and the six sold for . which amount did not pay for their passage across the Atlantic. Mr. Johnson said that he could have obtained better prices at home in spite of the war. Following is the summary of the sale: Haras de Villers.
