, t E - i . ■ . . 1 1 ■ STARS OF NEW ORLEANS HANDICAPS. New Orleans. La.. January 88. -In the older divi sion of the handicap horses. Dick Williams. J. W. Schorrs three yeat old Dick linnell Annie Williams gelding. i:nd J. J. l,illis have thus far shown to the best advantage, each of them winning three races, two of which were handicaps. The former has shown a world Of improvement sine- he arrived here, developing from a selling plater into a handicap horse in a short time. When owner Schorr got Dick Williams he ccrtainlv secured a bargain, as he won tive races foe him and beat all kinds of horses, Dick Williams cost the Schorr stable only 60. lie was claimed from W. L. Lewis at Lexington. Ky.. last fall in retaliation] for Lewis bideling up Rifle- Shooter, which at that time belonged to the Memphis turfman. Lewis did sot regard Dick Williams highly, as he had failed to make good i many times, anil Behest was not over enthusiastic about his e-ver becoming anything but a fair selling I plater at the best. He has beaten some good horses in the past few weeks, and his best asse-t is that he can run over | any kind of a track. He won one handicap at a [ mile and a sixteenth on a fast track, the first mile being urn in 1:38%, and the following week he - won another handicap over the same distance on a 1 heavy track. His first two efforts here were in J selling races. In one of them he was beaten 1 through faulty riding and in the other he ran as i though he far outclassed his Opponents. Seldom a day passes without one or more horses I being claimed, due to the claiming rule which is in i veigue here, and the big stables have nattered as 1 wedl as the small ones. George Phillips has boon 1 the most active claimant at the meeting to date and he is building up a fair stable « f horses ready 7 to run winning races in this manner. Of late the "halter men" have been active, but in only a few ! cases were they sue-eossful in getting a horse. In i one of these instances the horse which was bid up and bought. Business Agent was returned to his ! former owner for the same amount that he was taken out of the selling race for. Sam Louis enlivened things in this line- when he hit here, but he , is not near as active In ihis respect as formerly. There are at present only a few ailing horses quartered at the Fair Grounds and there are Boas with serious ailments. J. J. Lillis. which spreael a J foot in a recent race, is again being given stiff r work mts and apparently is little the worse for his i injury.
