• i ; • HAVANA RACING DRAWS MANY VISITORS. Iron Mask Reported to Be at His Best — Imperator s Winning Career for His Cuban Owner. Havana. Cuba. February 22. — Record numbers of tourists are arriving daily in Havana from the Fniteil States and it looks as if this will be the greatest winter season in the history of Cuba. With the vast thr.tig are coming many notables, -ome of them prominent in the turf world. During the last few days James Dutler and a party of friends and Jefferson Livingston and his parly were here. Mr. Butler is taking his annual winter vaeation. This year, instead .if going direct to California, he decided to visit southern Florida and then Cuba before going to the coast. Mr. Butler will, of course, pay Juarez a visit. Mr. Livingston is raeing a string of horses here, in ebatg* of Moae Coldblatt. one of which is the great sprinter Iron Mask. Coldblatt has the son of Disguise in better ondili.ni than he has been in two or three years. He is pointing the horse for the Havana Handicap, which will be run on February 24. the Cuban national holiday. Mr. Livingston will be here to see Iron Mask run in this race and. if all goes well, he will probably have the satisfaction of being presented with the handsome gold medal which the Havana City Council has donated to the owner of the wiuning horse. Iron Mask is undoubtedly the -fastest horse here and in his previous effort was Beaten by Iasperator only through a fluke. Imperator. by the way. has been the wonder horse -of the meeting, lie won a race and finished second for Hamilton Keene, who then disposed of him to Senor Tolon. The horse was turned over to John Powers and. during the time he has bad him in charge, he lias sent him to the post six t lasts, fin isliing fust iu five of his races and second in bis other start. Iu bis last start he shouldered 120 1 pounds and beat the lightly -weighted Water Lily. A. Sehutlinger rode the horse in most of his laces. Doyle ban the mount on Imperator on last Tuesday. Si-lint ringer having gone to Maryland. Sehutlinger was one of the best ridels here. The Hasty Pudding Club gave a dinner on Monday last to some friends. The club has tine quarters mi General Lee street in Marianao. John Powers is major donio of the outfit, with Eddie Hathinan and II. C. Riddle the chief assistants. Hathinan. by the way. is a gi*nl cook. It was he who prepared the sumptuous repast and it was the general J [ opinion that it he ever gave up training that George Boldt would engage him as one of the chefs at the Waldorf. Among those who attended the dinner were J. Powers, Janus Oass. Hen Walters. Al Weinberg, II. c. Riddle, E. Bnthman, Willie Davis and Mr. and Mrs. T. K. Lynch. Mel Collins left for New Orleans Monday, where i be was called to assist in the production of the show that the race track-folk are going to present before the meeting in tire Crescent City conies to a lose. Mayor Carter of Boston was among the visitors last week and with several friends occupied one - Of tin boxes at Oriental lark on Sunday. Willie Applegate won ,000 the first day he cut in at Oriental Park. Applegate will likely remain 1 until the close. He was one of the layers that 1 booked here all last winter. Jockey Smyth left for Toronto on Saturday to join the stable that Barry Littlefied is training for r J. E. Seagram. G. W. J. Bissell was called back to Pittsburgh 1 on account of the death of bis brother. It is ! doubtful if he returns here and his horses will prob- ably be sent from here to Hot Springs at the conclusion of the Havana meeting. J. W. Hedrick is one of the late arrivals. The Hedrick. horses have done particularly well here this winter. Eddie Katlunan will race a string in Canada next summer. Besides Maxims Choice be will probably have Little Nearer. Bollux and Lily Heavens I all of which should lie useful horses on the Canadian circuit. There are no sick horses here now. Harry Shaw, which landed here with fever contracted in Mary- land, is taking daily gallops and doing well.
