LOOKING T0RWARD TO THE KINGS PLATE. J. E. Seagram Conceded to Hold a Strong Hand for Most Notahlo of Canadian Races. Toronto. Oat., March 13. — Regarding the merits of the horses eligible for the Kings Plate to be run on the opeaiag day of the Woodbine spring meeting in May. the opinion seems to prevail generally thai the Seagram stable shelters the probable winner. The Seagram stable lias area this most Coveted of Canadian races thirteen times. The Ontario Jockey Club president had the beat hand of tWO-year-olds last year that he had in many years. Five youngsters from his stable carried the black and yellow task with considerable credit. In fait. Mandarin, Dehavea and Sweet Colleen all showed enough that any of the trio nnist be considered a serioaa factor for the kings gaiaaaa. Marry GiddingS has ;a he filly Aniline the one most likely to provide the contention. This slater t i Beehive, in twelve starts last year, won three races and was never worse than second. She packed all kinds of weight over all kinds of tracks. displayed keen speed, gameaess and an inclination to go a route. All of these qualities are esseatial to make a Kings Plate winner. Curiously the liost records of the Seagram stable candidates are also those of fillies. Sweet Colleen his four victories t her credit and one third, and v.. is twice unplaced, da tin eeaaions she beat ..inline, while the GiddingS filly finished as many lime, in front of her. At the seasons close there I la Utile to idioose between them. Sweet Colli en having a shade oa her rival, if aaythlag. Mr. Reagiams Dehavea made a late start, hut won on- of her two races. With a pull of sixteen pounds in weight she heat hoth Aniline and Sweet Colleen by a narrow margin it Woodbine. In her other start she was third, a creditable effort. Another filly. Late Hours, won two of her three races, hut her performance would indicate that she will hardly fancy a loag route. Alecto. the daughter of Inferno and Irish Witch, made six trips to the harrier. She was placed three times, bat failed to win. and iocs not appear daageroos. Gala Water, a. big, good-looker, also ran disappointingly in his only start. Mandarin, a grand-looking colt, is supposed to he tin star of the string, lie won the initial dish of last year for the Canadian-bred youogsters at Woodbine, nut in tie Coroaathm Stakes Armiae turned the tables on him. In this event he was second. Later in the year, at Windsor, he scored i,i- aily other success, imt with big weigh! coaees-si is from Armiae, which was again second. After at working Philistine in fast time at Windsor and looking like a real champion. .Man darin was unplaced in his next start. lie , s ■way too badly to cut maah figure in this race, however. His final appearauci of the year was at Wiadsor, when he scored bis head victory over Armiae when in receipt of twelve pounds actual Weight, hesides tin- sex allowance. Gala Day is auotber good-looking colt in the Waterloo turfmans string tii.it may trove trouble - some. He is the fil-t of tile gel of the imported horse Galatiae to go to the races. Most of Gala Days efforts would Indicate that he will develop into a good route going colt, although he has earned bracketn only oace out of sis attempts. In three of his other five --tar;- he was third. His wluaing performance was at Hamilton, when. with an advantage of fourteen pounds, he heat Armiae a head. In this event he c.mc from behind and finished gamely, ;;s he did in the majority of his races. Mandarin has shown the most of the eoits. however, and is likely to develop into the stables i i -t prospect for the coveted trophy. Charles Crews old Top. after winning two races at tile Ottawa spriug meeting, appeared to he com - inn along fioely, hut staled off as tU- raeiag season progressed, lie will have to show vast improvement this year to cut any figare in the Plate. The biggest disappointment of last season was Robert l ais Thorndiffe. He was a good-looking colt and Worki d fast, bat lever ran to his work. He went into winter quarters in tie- maiden diss. although he was twi eoond. three times third. aad as many times unplaced. His best performance was at Windsor, when he was second to Armiae, hut well beaten. It is just possildo that this c | loni. inn horse may improve this year am! lie a serious contender for the rich prize. Ban Slu re. the Thorncllffe BUblen other Plate candidate, although she has one rictory to her credit, has never shown eooagh to he considered troublesome. I.ood Shot his shown the most of the Hendrie hand of platers. She won three races, and was see oiul and third once each, out of ten trips t the gate last year. This filly seeaaa to possess as much speed as any of the other Canadian hr Is. I, in her rocs would indicate that she may not maintain it over a consider! hie distance of groaad. Waterdoora failed in i appe.ir.u.e. s under colors. Mcllrtde am! Poxlef will he the pair from which the Brookdale Stable of the Messrs. Dyaaeal will choose their representative. The former has borne fair performances to his credit, amottg them one victory. While he mud;- goad, it is doubtful if he will develop into a good horse over 11 fcMg rente, il hoi too much daylight under him aa a -two-year - old. hut may fill out. Ioxh t does not appear to be much. She failed to score in six attempts. Neither Miss Fav nor William W. in the William Walker stable are eligible for the Plate. Although both were bred here, they were in Oaba list winter, which makes them ineligible. Of the older maidens Unit are eligible for the his; race, Charles Miller"; Shrovitide seems to be the only one likely to develop into a serious factor. He is ordinary, bat the others seems to have less chance. The l!ll?. output from Mrs. I.. A. Livingstones Pontine Farm at Coboarg are scattered and like the Walker yoaugsters, are mostly all ineligible to start in the Plate for the reason that they have also l.een disqualified under the residence rule.
