, ONE THOUSAND GUINEAS CANDIDATES. Although of inferior interest to the Two Thousand Guineas, the One Thousand, in the abs, ine of the Oaks, will rank second among the cla mica this year. Among the ninety-five entries were several fillies of real high class: indeed, Fifinelln may have been the best two-year old of last season, in spite of her one failure against Telehnoue Oirl. It was :i gallant exhibition on the part of the half-sister to Silver Tag. and her most meritorious achievement, for. easily as she won first the Ful-bourne Stakes and finally the Cheveley Park Stakes, the opposition was weak in each Instance, whereas Telephone Girl was then at the top of her form ami afterwards gave weight to and beat such as Aruos. Analogy and Salandra, altogether an excellent record. As it stands on paper the form shows Fifinella something like twenty-one pounds in front of Argon, which, however, must have come on a lot between September 2! and October 15. when he won the Middle Park Plate. But even admitting the improvement, there is no getting away from the great merit of Fifinella. which has only to keep well to have a splendid chance of winning for Mr. Hulton his first classic race. Telephone Girl had no classic or other engagements of any importance, and could. I believe, have been bought for 2.500 pounds at the end of the season, tint the wind infirm itv presumably proved a stumbling block, and Mr. Joel decided to send her forthwith to Sunstar to start her stud career. Starflight and Broken Doll still remain to represent the stable, but neither comes up to the necessary standard, although there are great possibilities about the good-looking daughter of Class Doll. Which has done remarkably well since she won the Prendergast Stakes. Kingselere is not as well off for fillies as colts, as far as can be judged from public form, but we know nothing unapt Betty B.. Area or Mettlesome. Uortense was seen once unplaced for the Rendlesham Stakes at Kempton. and F.urloek is not good enough, though useful. I fear the same remark applies in the case of Angelina, though she is a beautiful mare, and pretty sure to win some of her engagements, as she stays well, and WIS only beaten a short head by Grassland for the Houghton Stakes. Lord Derby has Canyon. Russet. Sereiiissima and V.i Via to choose from, and decided preference may be declared for the first, which has, I hear, progressed the right way during the recess and is growing into a beautiful mare. Her form is distinctly good, if not free from criticism, for after 1 aaily beating Marcus in a Maiden Plate and following with another smart show in the Bedford Stakes, she disappointed greatly when she failed altogether in the Chesterfield Stakes. She was beaten a length and a half by Melga for the Triennial Produce Stakes when giving away weight, but on their next meeting the conditions were level, and she turned the tables decisively. Next came the Dewhnrst Plate, and with if a curious display, and yet withal a really good performance, for after hanging fire in the middle of the race and losing her place, she; caught hold again in the Dip and put in such good work that two j more strides would have sufficed to give her vie- | tory instead of Atheling. That the daughter of I Chaucer is a good mare there can be no doubt, but I it seems that she cannot always be relied on to I give of her best. Still, she can unhesitatingly be classed with Fifinella as the pick of last cars two-year-old fillies, and from this pair I anticipate the winner will come, unless, indeed, the hopes centered in the "darkie" Pomerania should be realized, and the sister to Pommern is certainly good looking enough for anything, And has shown that she can travel at a great pace at home. Every week the "Calendar" brings news of certificates lodged for horses bred in France, and it may be assumed that we shall, as last year, have many visitors from the far side of the Channel. — "Vigilant" in London Sportsman.
