HE HAD A TRULY SURE THING. Relative to old-tiiae racing happenings in Lng- land, a London exchange says that in the early part of the last c ntury General Scott won one of his many thousands of pounds at Newmarket by the following wafer: .lust as his horse was about to bturt for a sweepstakes Mr. lanton called out to him. "General. Ill lay you a thousand pounds your horse is neither first nor last." The general ac- l cepted the bet and immediatey gave orders to his I rider. His horse came in last and he claimed the M money. Mr. lanton objected to the payment bc- H cause the general had spoken to his rider, but the ■ Jockey Club held that the l et was not laid upon H the chance of the place in which the horse would H come, if the rider was informed of it. hut upon the K opinion that he had not sliced enough to be first H uor tractability enough to be brought in last.
