LEXINGTON TRACK MUDDY HEAVY RAIN PRECLUDES ANY CHANCE OF FAST TIME THIS AFTERNOON. Grand Card of Seven Races Promises High-Class Racing — Waterhlossom, Chalmers and Bars and Stars in the Opening Dash. j Lexington, Ky., April 20. — The spring season of racing in Kentucky will have a muddy inauguration hen- tomorrow. Following a ten hours, steady rain last night, intermittent showers fell today and the Kentucky Association course is soft, bnt with a strong wind and sunshine tomorrow morning it will have a chance to dry out considerably before racing time. Superintendent James P. Ross permitted no one to gallop a horse over the course today, all moves being made on the sand track skirting the infield. Secretary Shelley should be proud of his opening card, inasmuch as he has brought into contest the real stars, especially among the two-year-olds gathered at the course. The card is topi ed by the Phoenix Hotel Handicap, in which eight good horses are named with a prospect of a gruelling contest. The inaugural dash also promises 11 sparkling race, since it will bring together such favorites as Waterhlossom, Chalmers. Bars and Stars. Sanward. Ed Howard and others. The opening days program called for six races, but the entry for the three-year-old filly race was so heavy that it was decided to split it and make a seven-ra.ee program for the first day. It is a matter of remark that only one of the races is a selling affair. Arrivals of today swelled the total of horses at tin- track to approximately 700. Of these, ninety per cent are ready to race. The arrivals included six horses belonging to John Sanford. in charge of Preston Burch. Among them are George Smith, one of the favorites for the Kentucky Derby, Quartz and St. Isidore. Among the jockeys who will ride here are: J. McCabe. K. Goose. T. Henry. Mack Garner. C. Hunt. A. Mott. H. Stearns. E. Martin. W. W. Taylor. C. Yan Duseu. D. Connelly. W. Andress. F. Murphy. T. Rice. T. Buckles. F. Teahau. H. Shilling. F. Cooper. J. Brown. W. Brazel. K. Lapaille, -I.. Gentry, J. Kederis. J. Daniels, C. Kirschbaum, F. Williams. W. Kelker. J. Loftus and W. Median. Emerson Cochran, owned by R. L. Baker, pulled up lame from a bruised frog and it was decided to let up on his training. He will run out until fall, probably. Gene Elrod will have twelve pari-mutuel machines in operation. • The number of visitors here this spring appear to be greater than ever and among them are many from the east, who have never before attended the racing at this point.
