GENERAL NEWS NOTES OF THE DAY. Paris advices of yesterday said: French positions on the Yerdun front west of the Meuse were bombarded vigorously by the Germans last night. The attack was centered on Avocourt wood and the first -line trenches north of hill 304. In the Woevre there was a big gun bombardment. It is announced that the government purposes to take measures to pr pare French territorial troops for war. The official French statement of this afternoon, in which these developments are reported says that a number of German prisoners were taken during yesterdays attack north of the Aisne. The text of the statement follows: During an attack yesterday north of the Aisne, which enabled us to capture the small woods south of the woods of Buttes. we took seventy - two prisoners, of whom one was an officer and seven petty officers. Several enemy rceonnoisanees which were attempted during the night toward our trenches in the sectors of Paissy and Troyon were dispersed by our fire. West of the Meuse there was an intense bombardment of our positions in the woods of Avocourt and upon our first lines north of hill No. 304. East of the Meuse there was moderate artillery activity. In the Woevre the enemy bombarded our positions at Haudiomont and Ronvaux with big guns. Our artillery energetically replied. There was no infantry action in this region during the night. In Lorraine the enemy attempted a coup de main upon our small i»osts north of Embermenil. It was repulsed with losses. In the Vosges reconnoissanees of our positions at Chappelotte cost the enemy very important losses. From London a dispatch of yesterday said: Liberty Hall, headquarters of the Dublin rebels, and Stephens Green, which was captured by them, have been occupied by the military. Premier Asquith announced today in the house of commons. Steps to arrest all those concerned in the movement Mr. Asquith said, were being taken. Martial law has been proclaimed in the city and county of Dublin, it was announced. Troops have arrived at Dublin from Belfast and England. The following telegram was received in London today from Baron Winibourne, lord lieutenant for Ireland, dated Dublin: "The situation is satisfactory. Stephens Oreen has been occupied. Eleven insurgents have been killed. The provincial news is reassuring."
