CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE RACE WHICH ENLISTS THE ATTENTION OF THE TURF WORLD TODAY 4. : 4 This is Louisvilles proudest day. It is Kentucky Derby day. That sums up about everything of swelling pride, flaming excitement and firm belief that about all the good people worth having are there to witness the glorious event. Truth to tell, there will be goodly sections of the denizens of New York! Chicago and other urban centers gathered at Churchill Downs to help the elated Louisvillians do homage to King Horse. There will, no doubt, be a great assemblage there this afternoon and the occasion is worthy of it. Adverse circumstances have eliminated such greater races as the American Derby and Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes, and now the Kentucky Derby shares with the Latonia Derby the honor of being one of the two most richly endowed stake races in this country for three-year-olds. As a race it antedates all western stakes and is now a fairly venerable event, as racing goes in this country. It has been run annually without a break since 1875. It results that the race of this afternoon is the forty-second Kentucky Derby. In its years it has been contested by many great race horses, greatest of which was Hindoo. But such others as Aristides, Himyar, Fonso, Leonatus, Drake Carter, Joe Cotton, Ben Ali, Blue Wing, Spokane, Proctor Knott. Riley, Kingman, Balgowan. Halma, Ben Brush, Ornament. Plaudit. Allan-a-Dale, Sir Huon, Meridian. Governor Gray. Old Rosebud and Regret occupy exulted places in the annals of American racing.
