PREAKNESS HANDICAP DAY DAMR0SCH AN UNEXPECTED WINNER OF PIM-LICOS MOST IMPORTANT SPRING RACE. Robert Oliver Proves Victor in the Glenmore Steeplechase— Pimlico Meeting Drawing to a Close with Interest and Patronage Unabated. R.iltimoro, Md.. May 15. — The Preaknesg Handicap, which featured todays card, brought together a good band of three-year-olds to contest one of the annual fixtures of the Maryland Jockey Club program. The dash was at one mile and an eighth and had ,500 in added money. The winner turned up from an unexiiected quarter when J. K. L. Ross Damrosch scored in an easy manner. The winner was an added starter and made all the pace. He ran wide when entering the homestretch and forced Achievement out. which allowed Greenwood to slip in for second money. The showing of King Neptune was a sorry disappointment to the spectators. The card offered was well arranged throughout and provided spirited racing. In the Glenmore Steeplechase a good field of timber toppers faced tho starter and Robert Oliver was returned the winner over Stonewood and Collector. J"he winner was ridden by F. Williams, went to the front in the final turn of the field and drew away at the finish. The owners of the first and third horses in the Preakness are bath Montreal sportsmen, J. K. L. Ross being identified with the steel industry and W. Viau. a prominent manufacturer. Roth horses will go from here to Toronto this week. With but a few days remaining for the meeting the attendance showed no falling off. The crowd was especially big for Monday. Speculation was exceedingly brisk throughout the afternoon. Fred W. Gerhardy, well known racing official and former rider, was a visitor at Pimlico this afternoon. Mr. Gerhardy. who is now in the theatrical business, is here with his show, the Mischief Makers. He will wind up the theatrical season in New York and then go to Canada to assume his duties as one of the officials at Windsor and Hamilton. Frank Tannchill. owner of Song of Valley, was a visitor at Pimlico this afternoon. The McLennan purse, which was split and run in two divisions, was named for the assistant secretary of the Maryland Jockey Club, Joseph McLennan. An effort was made to have V. Towers come here from New York to ride Syosset in todays steeplechase, but trainer Ownos required his services at Belmont Park for the schooling of some of Mrs. Whitneys jumiXTS. Darbishire. which broke down in Saturdays steeplechase, was presented to track superintendent John Hrennnn by H. G. Hedwell. The horse was not seriously injured, as was at first supposed, anil it is possible that he will be used as a hunter next fall. W. A. P.urttschell reports that the fast horse Miramiehi. which was injured here last fall, has fully recovered and is taking his daily gallops. Miramiehi was turned out here during the winter, lie is now the property of Dr. Hamlet Moore, of New Orleans. A. J. Hlakeley this morning disposed of the two-year-old Raining Shot, by Salvation — Sain Shot to R. Earl. Frank Rray will train the youngster. Raining Shot showed a phenomenal trial a few days ago and is said to be a most promising filly. She is a half-sister to Ruckshot. Of the fifteen youngsters that Hl.ikeley took up for II. O. Comstoek last soring, he has disposed of all but Kalitan at private sale. Kalitan. which was taken sick at Howie lias been turned out at Capt. W. F. Pres-graves place in New Jersey. William Northey. secretary of the Montreal Jockey Club, was a visitor. He brings the news that the new steel stand at Blue Honnets will lw fully completed by May 20 and that the course will be in splendid order for tho opening. There are several stables already at Blue Rennets and three or four carloads will ship direct to Montreal from Lexington and Louisville. Former jockey T. Harty yesterday committed suicide at Pimlico, by shooting himself in the head. Harty was employed by J. Sterling as a rubber. His home is in Brooklyn, where his body will be shipped for interment.
