SPECTRE gained steadily and, having slipped through on the inside on the stretch turn, finished gamely. HYANNIS was always a forward contender and, re-I spouding gamely to punishment, outstayed BATTLE. The latter enme through on the inside in the llnal quarter and would have been third in another stride. VALERIE AVEST had no mishaps. The latter did not appear to run freely in the going. SEPOCT refused to go. VERMONT raced into a long lead on the backstretch and was taken under restraint while rounding the lower turn, but tired when challenged.
