RUNNING OF ENGLANDS RICHEST RACE. It turns out that, because of developing a quarter crack, Mr. John Stanfords good colt Nassovian had to be declared from the Jockey Club Stakes and the Cesarewitch. Up to the time of the mischance, no horse could have been doing better in training and his able trainer had high hope of landing Englands richest race, the Jockey Club Stakes for his American imtron. The big race was worth 7,175 net to the winner, so it was a prize well worth striving for. It was run October 5 and was won by the Duke of Portlands three-year-old Cannobie by a head from th four-year-old Sanctum, with the three-year-old Kwang Su third. The latter was the favorite at to 1 but Cannobie was an outsider at 100 to 7 in the betting. Of the race Loudon Sportsman of the next day said: "Though the Jockey Club Stakes proved somewhat disappointing from a classic point of view, it yielded an excellent medium as a public Cesa re-witch trial. AVhen the competitors were viewed in the Birdcage prior to the race the general opinion was unanimous that Sanctum took the palm for condition, whereas Kwang Su failed to make many friends. In these circumstances, it was not surprising that the Manton colt did not start a hot favorite. After some of the early birds had accepted 2 to 1, instead of hardening Kwang Su went out to 5 to 2. By the tactics adopted by Donoghue on Sanctum in the race, it was evident that the Stockbridge people had nothing to hide, and were anxious to know what their Cesarewitch candidate could do in public. From start to finish Donoghue kept his mount well in the picture. As soon as the field turned on to the flat the blue jacket with red-hooped sleeves of Mr. Raphael were conspicuously in the van, and, what is more, the pace seemed quite good. It was not until the Bushes were passed that Cannobie dispossessed Sanctum of the lead, and even then the result was by no means certain, for Sanctum stuck to his task and the Duke of Portlands colt only got the better of him by a neck when the judges box was reached. When Lancaster saw pursuit was hopeless he appeared to ease Kwang Su up the final ascent, and possibly Mr. Fairies colt could hare finished a little nearer to Sanctum had he hare been pressed; still, he could not have gained second place. Everybody agreed that the Cesarewitch horse had run a great public trial, and it was therefore not surprising that he subsequently consolidated his market position for next Wednesday weeks big race. By the time the horses had weighed in 4 to 1 was accepted about him for the Cesarewitch. and should all go well with him he will probably start at a shorter price."
