MANLY MEMORIAL DRAWS BRILLIANT ASSEMBLAGE THRONGS PIMLICO TO WITNESS RICH RACES DECISION Expectation Proves the Victor in a Close Finish with Bello of Bryn Mawr anil Falmouth The Favorite Weldship Falls Baltimore, Md., November 7. The running of the Manly Memorial Steeplechase Handicap at Pimlico this afternoon attracted a brilliant assemblage to this famous old course. Lovers of the thoroughbred from all sections of the country made the trip here to witness the inaugural running of this .".,000 stake. It brought a high-class field of jumpers to the post and furnished a stirring contest, with Expectation the victor by a scant length from Belle of JSryn Mawr, which in turn beat Falmouth by a head for second place. Weld-ship, the top weight, made all the iace to the fifteenth jump, where he fell, and Vifir lost his rider at the same jump. Cynosure was pulled up at the tenth fence;. The other seven starters finished the course without mishap. It was an ideal day for out-of-doors sport and one of the largest crowds that ever visited the Pim-lico course was in attendance. Well-matched fields wont to the post in the different races and interesting contests resulted. The holiday spirit prevailed and much enthusiasm was manifested. Before tin; races many dinner parties were given in the club house. Among the prominent visitors noticed on the club house balconies and lawn were: Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Weld, Mr. and Mrs. Philip A. Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lane, Willis Kilmer, O. Jf. Hull, II. Osmer Barrett, W. II. Bolton, Fred Lewisohn. C. R. Flcischninnu of New York, Mrs. A. II. lligginson, J. W. Moffatt and J. F. Flanagan, Jr., of Boston, Mr. and Mrs. Archibald Bark-lie, Mr. and Mrs. S. I. Riddle, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. .leffords, Edward Crozier, A, .1, A, Deveraux and George Willing of Philadelphia; Mr. and Mrs, Edward Mitchell, -Mr. and Mrs. E. 15. McLean, W. C. Rustic, Samuel Ross, W. T. Chapman, Count and Countess Rakmetelt and E. P. Hickey of Washington. After the running of the steeplechase, a ruling was issued by the stewards suspending jockey ISeverley Bryant, pending an investigation of his ride on Expectation in his, previous, race. Ir. J. S. Tyree, after an illness lasting several weeks, is up and about again, and trainer Will Shields expects him at Iimlico tomorrow to look over the horses he is training for him. Dr. Tyree has a dozen fine-looking yearlings at Penning. He has instructed Shields to school the three-vear-ohl Uilly MeGee through the field at Penning this fall with the idea of making a steeplechaser of him next year. Jockey Andy Schuttinger was compelled to cancel his engagements this afternoon, on account of illness resulting from excessive reducing of weight. Ray Miller was an arrival from Windsor this morning. He is on his way to Havana, but will remain here until the conclusion of the Pimlico meeting. There were nine cars in the Havana horse special that passed through Baltimore last night bound, for Oriental Park in Cuba. It was one of the best: specials of the sort that ever left any track and was made up entirely of seventy foot three door cars. The Marrone Stable has added the fast horse J. J. Lillis to the sale which will be held in the paddock at Iimlico on Saturday. The juniper Mo will also be sold. William Northoy. secretary of the Montreal Jockey Club, and W. P. Eraser, secretary of the Ontario Jockey Club, were among the prominent arrivals today. Roth are ardent steeplechase enthusiasts and were much interested in the running of the Manly Memorial Stakes.
