NUMBER OF HORSES IN OUR RACING. In the year 1903, 6,232 horses participated In the racing of the United States and Canada. That was and is the record ill respect to number of thoroughbreds in racing in any one year in this country. From that point there was a decline, due to adverse legislation in various statets, until in 1913 only a total of 3,541 racers were ia action. However, with a difference of only twelve horses less, that was practically about the same as the total for li12, and there was an upward tendency manifest last year when the total mounted up to 3,700. It is probable that when the time to compile the statistics of this year arrives, a further gain will be shown. That this is a satisfactory feature is be-jond dispute. At the same time it is patent that we have a long way to travel before the diminution ii: our thoroughbred resources wrought since 190S will be fully repaired. The number of horses raced over American tracks each year since and including 1900, is as follows: Year. Horses. Year.
