, . . J. TIME-WORN VETERANS OF THE RACE TRACK WHICH WERE IN ACTIVE SERVICE LAST YEAR i l Old horses racing successfully are by no means unki.own factors now or formerly. Hickory Jim was a wonder for speed, although the stories atxmt his age. ranging from eighteen years to twenty-tive years, were probably fairy stories. He at any rate, like Budwelser of today, was i.|d enough to be in retire -inent. Horses have been scarce and the demand lively in recent years, which accounts in good part for the fait that an unusual BUaaber of horses older tlnni the customary racing age have been kept in active service, with fair success in some cases and utter failure in others. Such formerly good racers as Black Mate. Cemmell. Jack Nnnnally. Pedro. Coal, lajaroita and Sir John Johnson are in the latter category and were unable to win a ceat last year. On the successful side, however. I.ndv.a iser raced brilliantly for his years and Bed River. Millie Hibbs. Fastoeo, Boyai Onyx. Web Carter. Swede Sam and a few others won enough money to justify their retention in racing. Following were the horses in racing eleven years old or over: Hots.. Age. Pedigree. Owner Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Pup. Won.
