The various stakes recently closed for Newmarket have done extremely well, and special note may be made of eighty four entries for the Ashley Plate at the Crave:., i.inety two each for the Two-Year-Old Plate and May Plate at the First Spring, one hundred and four for the Soltykoff Stakes at the Second July, seventy one for the Clearwell Stakes at the Second October and fifty-nine for the Criterion Stakes at the Houghton Meeting. Anions the early spring events, which will lie anticipated with more than passing interest, as bear-ins on lassie racing, are the Column Produce, the Wood Ditton and Craven Stakes. In the first of these we may renew acquaintance with Athdara. Wells. Gay Crusader. Nation, Golden Maid, Minstrel. Lammermuir and Coq dOr. while in the dark division is Summouer. a well -reputed son of Swyn-ford — Duma, that was too big and unfurnished to lie trained list year. Reverence, Rhona and La Grise for the other race. Other Important Entries in Future Events. Looking farther ahead one finds his majesty at the head of sixteen subscribers of 1H sovereigns each, half forfeit, each of whom nominates tie produce of three mares for the Buckenhain Stakes of 1919. Equally satisfactory are the returns for the Bibury Club meeting Salisbury with thirty -nine subscribers to the Hurstbourno Stakes; Doncaster with sixty-seven for the Rous Plate and forty-seven for the Scarborough Stakes: Gatwiek with seventy-one for the Home-bred Two year-old Plate, and York August with 110 for the Gimcrack Stakes, which allies with it a aeta to the effect that in the event of it being found impossible to hold the meeting application will be made to the stewards of the Jockey Club to sanction a race to which the York committee will fire 300 sovereigns to be confined to horse- originally entered for the Gimcrack Stakes, and to be under similar conditions. — Loudon Sportsman. ____
