MATT M. ALLEN WELL KNOWN ON TURF. New Official Timer of the Jockey Club Needs No Introduction to Veterans. Matt M. Allen, who was selected by the stewards of the Jockey Club to act as official tinier of the New York tracks, is kuown on the turf as the "Kid Glove Trainer." He may need some introduction t i the newcomers to the turf, but the old-timers all know him. or at least know who he has boon. Allen was one of the trainers who first took strings of horses to race in England, he having in charge horses belonging to 1lunger Walton. He was the trainer of Gold Heels when that horse won the Suburban in 1902. Since then Mr. Allen lias owned and raced horses of his own training. but during the past few years has not been active on the turf. Mr. Allen takes the place of the late W. II. Barretto. who had held the watch while the races were being run on the Jockey Club tracks for more than a quarter of a century, and finished up the season last year with the closing of the meeting at Belmont Bark.
