MAY AFFECT NEW YORK TRACKS. Albany, N. Y... May 15. Judgments convicting i Joseph Tortora and Morris Hoffman of New York I of violating the law prohibiting bookmaking without writing on New York race tracks were sustained today by the Court of Appeals. The convictions were the first in the state under the amended anti-gambling laws and the court ruling is considered a precedent which will probably cur tail public betting at race tracks. Tertora and ! Hoffman were convicted of accepting oral wagers at the Jamaica. L. I. track. They did not dispute the fats in the ease, but questioned the validity 1 of the "bookmaking without writing" law. under 1 which they were convicted as void, "because of indefiniteuess and uncertainty."
