New York, June 2.- Running a mnrvelonsiy game, race over a track unfavorable to him aad aided by superb horsemanship on the part in jockey Butwell. August Belmonts Hourless brought cheers from l.i.HM racing enthusiasts at Belmont lark this afternoon, when he captured the Withers Stakes in a hard drive from a sterling band of three-year-old racers. A head back came Ii. P. Whitneys Rickety, with II. II. Hewitts Skeptic third, the same margin away. Campf ire. the lillti Futurity winner and star of the B. 1. Wilson establishment, was the trongly supported public choice in this race, but fourth plica was his portion. Canil fire was the ,,n. to take up the runaing with the barriers rise and Butwell soon shot Hourless alongside tiie pac-maker. When Robinson sent Rickety to he leaders after tlir-e-ei»hths of the waj had beea covered, Rutw.di eaaed Hourless back and. aa the fii Id loiialed tie- turn, shot his mount for the inner rail. Swinging for home. Rickety and Campfire were racing head and head and it was here that the whip of Biitw.-ll played its winning part. As th. leaders came a trifle wide he slipped Ihroiigh next to the rail and, after a brief struggle, went to the front. In the final eighth he tired and when Birkety came .-gain, he was forced to a drive to maintain his advantage. The Withers had a net value of ,475 to the winner. Almost a Disqualification. The disqualification of the meeting threatened when H. P. Whitneys Rosie OGrady was returned winner in the Fashion Stakes, which had a net vail f .00t to the victor. This filly swerved badly while coming down the straightaway and interfered with the WicklilTe Stables Royal Llisign. Her final er.ezy swerve brought her to the outside fence.
